Tablo talks about how award shows would give Epik High awards only if they attended so they politely declined

"We'll receive the award if you'll give it to us even if we can't go" - Epik High ain't playing with your dumb tactics. This is why I have no problem when companies or artists decide to not attend some award show.

It's old news, I know but interesting to hear it from someone in the industry.

Anyway, you can read the whole interview they did with Forbes talking about going independent once again

Wbk Korean award shows are trash (except KMA + Gaon Music Awards + and maybe KPMA).

Rise KPMA~

I recommend everyone to read the interview fully, they make some great points about working independently, with a company (YG) and as a company, along with views in the music industry of these type of management in the current days

I love how they talk about yt, imo I think it's crazy how any artist can set up their own socmedia like yt Instagram etc just like an artist from a big company

But I couldn't find the part about awards in the article idk why

You couldn't find it because Tamar, the writer, didn't include it. She wrote a separate tweet about other things they discussed but didn't make it into the article. Maybe space issues.

This tells me that awards shows already picked their winners.

It's logical that the awards shows want the winners to be performed, it would be too boring that all the prizes are to artists who don't attend and only perform not winners.

But it's funny to read that people say that the KMA are the only important ones when no less than 3 years ago nobody knew them and they were totally nugus, lol. Awards shows haters are really funny.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong

I'm going to post my favorite parts of the interview bc I really liked it

Tablo: [...]At this point it seems like for us to grow in different directions we need to be in complete control of what we do. We also need that drive and that hunger, where we are forced into situations where we have to do things ourselves. Those situations are usually the ones where we come up with our most creative things because we run into roadblocks.

We have no idea how long we’ll be able to do this for. We don’t make that decision. All we can do is try new things and pray that the universe takes us in the right direction. So we decided, at least for the next how many years, “Let’s try to do things our way.†In a completely new way, and just take risks.

Tablo: Things have gotten much better [for independent acts]. In comparison, when we did the independent thing last time with Map the Soul people didn’t have YouTube channels. It wasn’t a prevalent thing. It wasn’t something you had to have. We were trying to figure out why we had made a Youtube channel originally. But the only reason why we made it was because we had a bunch of videos that we needed to put up and we didn’t have server space. It was costly. So we were like, ‘Where do we put this?’ So we put them up on YouTube and it became the hub of the label. We had no idea what we were doing, but we would put up these funny videos of us fake rapping and stuff. Just things like that. Instagram and Twitter…  Now all these things have become very established, they basically are the industry.

Tablo: [...]I think a lot of people are already independent. A huge number of [south Korean] hip-hop acts, they’re mostly independent. A lot of the R&B and urban music acts are independent. I think what’s happening is that the big labels, they’re very innovative as well. So they have a pulse on the industry. They probably have a much better understanding than we do. For example, J.Y. Park [founder of JYP Entertainment], I saw his
and he’s very intelligent, right? We’re personal friends with him. But when he said that [the company shifted its management structure to work in smaller teams], I was like, “Okay, so that is where this is going if JYP knows this.†I think that’s the way YG does it too. Even the big labels are basically creating these focus groups around the artists so that it’s not an artist working with 200 people they don’t know the names of. I think it’s evolving, even with the big labels. Obviously that’s the way it’s going.

Why do you think Epik High has been able to sustain itself for so long?

Tablo: I have no clue.

Tukutz: Cause we’re hard working.

Tablo: I think, one: That we didn’t break up. That’s probably the biggest reason, right? I think the thing behind that is that we’re actually friends, which allows us to love and hate each other on and off constantly without ever calling it quits. Cause that’s what friendship is. Also, that nobody ever wanted to break off and do their own thing. Secondly, I think just our fandom is just really amazing. In Japan, for example, we had a show where someone came with a baby stroller. She had become a mom, and this girl had come to our first show in Japan like 10 or 11 years ago. Just things like that.

I think the relationship we have with our fans is somewhere between artist, fan, and family. It’s just this weird thing where we not only share the music and the content but I think we literally share an era, a time. When they listen to our first album they remember when they were in high school or middle school, when they went to college, when they graduated, when they got their first job, when they met their first boss, when they met the destined guy who broke their heart and found the right one, and got married and had a kid. And the kid is the same age as one of our kids… We shared a lifetime together. So I think that is something that you’re not going to get with many other fandoms. Fifteen, 16 years is a long time. And a lot has happened also to Epik High in the public eye. There have been humongous ups and downs. And to share all that, the good times and the bad times, I think it just makes it very real.

KMA are new awards too (created in 2004, but with indie and nugu spirit).

The only difference with Awards Shows is only the music critics vote.

I mean the Korean music award show season has always been a bit of a joke and the no attendance = no awards mantra has been known for years.

But, It is always interesting to see active Korean artists call out the sham for what it is though.

Wish more would

Also, Tablo is telling us that awards shows already picked the winners and if you don't show up, they'll give it to someone else.

Both entertainment companies and award show organizers are at fault for how trashy these shows are. Both parties use awards as negotiating power for who will attend and who will win. So yeah I don't think you can only blame award shows here. They can't just have popular groups not attend and still give them awards, no one will watch their show.
