Question for people that fast for religious reasons

Well I’m Muslim and I fast during the month of Ramadan. We have to start fasting at sunrise and then break our fast at sunset - during the summer, the days are longer so that means we fast for longer. We can’t eat anything, including drinking water until the evening. I just binge eat until we have to start fasting again for the next day, that way I feel full for the entire day because of all the food I ate yesterday. (The way I phrased that was a mess but it’s 4am and I can’t really sleep so)

IDK if this question is weird but what if you are really sick or something and need to drink water or something like that? Is that an exception?

If you’re really sick then yes. But you have to make up for it after the month is up, I usually fast during the winter since the days are shorter.

You also can’t fast if you’re on your period. I live in the UK but my school is predominantly made up of Muslims and the boys would always pick on the Muslim girls they saw eating and call them out for being on their period. Happened to me on many occasions lol

Yes! This year I remember I fasted all day and was starving but as soon as it was time to eat I ran to the toilet and realised that I started my period so my fast didn’t count. It was so frustrating but now it kinda makes me laugh lol

Well no. I'm a Hindu and there's a number of different types of fasts with different foods/drinks allowed/prohibited. During most fast time, you're generally allowed one meal before start of period (which can be 8/12/16/24/36/48 hours long in general) generally some time before sunrise, and one has restricted choice even in that - like only uncooked cereal, fruit, no root-veggies, milk or ghee etc. - so a light amount can be eaten where carb and sugar in little measure is there, otherwise over-eating will make you feel sick. For some fasts, I have taken only honeyed water and few tulsi leaves. Some very serious personal fasts require complete break - no food, no water - for number of days. (Some barely done ones require worse - but let's not get into those).

For younger children (below 12) or girls menstruating, pregnant women, some type of sicknesses - fasts are forbidden.
