[Pannchoa] [teens stories] why don't foreigners study korean when they come here on vacation?

I went to Subway and there were tourists ordering food.

They saw that the part-timer was unable to understand their super fluent English so they took a deep sight and had an annoyed expression, and explained their order again in Englishã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

If they come visit here, shouldn't they at least learn some basics?

I always do that when I go traveling though?

When I went o CO-EX too, some foreigners were asking me for a store's location and they always ask me in English ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ My friend works at a road shop and all the foreigners always talk to her in English and tell her about their skin type, ask for her recommendations, etc. Then, they would see my friend struggling and would sigh and go ask another worker. I understand that from a customer service point of view, it's better if workers can speak English. But these foreigners are the ones coming to Korea so they should at least make some effort to know the basics ã…¡ã…¡ There are lots of countries where they don't use English on a daily basis and where English isn't their first language. There was also an interview with a foreigner who was saying how he was having a hard time in Korea communicating with hospitals because we didn't speak English.. ha... do they think that we're English speakers here...

Or they expect us to have a translator or something. Do they think that it's the US here? F*ckers, do you think that we're all good at English? Why do we have to know English?!!!!

Even though English is the world's universal language, it's not our country's language. When foreign actors' movies hit daebak in Korea, they would make some kind of 'thank you' videos/message right? And the reactions are so different if they use Korean vs English, even though they use broken Korean. This time too, there was some foreigner who asked the reporter if she could speak in English because she doesn't really know Korean. For me, when I go to those non-English speaking countries like Spain, France or Japan, I would write down some simple phrases down in my notebook. If you go in the streets and meet a foreigner, 7/10 of the foreigners would ask you questions in English and most of the time, I wouldn't be able to understand what they say. For the remaining 3/10, they would use some mix of English and Korea. Seriously, I think that it's good that hallyu is getting more popular now and that more foreigners are learning Korean

Your thought = my thought. For real, they are the ones coming here so I'd rather them speaking in Korean even if htey were using an online translator. I'm so mad when they just use their own language

I hate it when the foreigns kids shamelessly ask for English subtitles on YouTube. They would click on a Korean YouTuber's video and say things like "their title is in English so why don't they have English subtitles? I hope that they can speak English. Such a shame that it's not in English" and make a fuss about it. I don't understand what the issue is

I've always found this weird.

I live in the US, and people speak Spanish to me all the time. It is frustrating sometimes because you want to help but you can't. However, I've also learned that even if you prepare as much as you can, there are still some things that you miss and can't improvise with.

lmao most people ik can't stand it either

anyway i understand why they're mad, i can't understand why people would travel to a foreign country without at least trying to learn a few basic phrases in that country's language. but no i'm not gonna learn your country's entire dictionary for a week's stay in your country. sorry.

Maybe some basic phrases yea

I think If someone tries using English in another country it's fine since it is considered an universal language but to get mad they dont understand when it's not their native one isnt it either. Knowing English when you live in a non English country isn't mandatory

Yeah. English is seen as universal language and if you work on tourist spot, you should know it.

It should be basic manners to learn few phrases in language of the visited country (good day, good bye, thank you, sorry etc), but asking us to know how to order food or how to describe our skintypes is kinda too much.

No Korean I met here didnt even try to speak my language in my country when buying things. Not even those who live here. On the other hand as a person who worked on tourist spot... Koreans and Japanese (and Russians, sometimes French) were the worst customers who refused to speak English and demanded us to know their language and we are non English speaking country on the other side of a globe).

Seriously sometimes it feel like some Asian countries has this feeling of superiority when they think everyone should learn their language if they want to travel. (And in the same time being proud of their own celebrities ignoring that they are in foreign country and speaking Korean)

lol at these kids talking about how if THEY would visit a foreign country then THEY would CERTAINLY educate themselves on the language there to avoid looking DUMB!!!

like ya sure nice sentiment but u are 15 and have never traveled.

I'm pretty sure the tourists were annoyed because they went to Subway thinking it was a "safe" place to order food and there would be staff who spoke English because SUBWAY IS AN AMERICAN FRANCHISE. lol.

this would be completely different from going to a little Korean noodle shop and getting mad that they speak Korean

Do Koreans speak German then when they visit Germany?
The majority speak in English.

English is a universal language. No one expects tourists ANYWHERE to speak native languages. That's impossible. A few basic phrases? Doable. But that's about it really. What is with this sense of superiority and getting mad over things that happen everyday all around the world??

Lmao even if you’re not American or from an English speaking country you tend to speak English when you go to countries because that’s something ppl think is universal. Because more often than not everyone has learnt some basic English in their schooling. Where as a German learning korean or a korean learning Dutch is far less likely.

None the less I learn to at least say a few phrases if I know I’m going to a country that doesn’t speak English.

The responses to this thread kinda prove the Korean OP's point.

Of course you can't learn Korean for a weekend or a short vacation, but also expecting people to speak English, and getting frustrated at them when they don't is so entitled.

Naturally anywhere people go they'll try with English first if they don't speak the language, but there's a way to be respectful about it, and even here in Europe, American tourists especially are some of the most entitled god awful tourists to deal with.

English might have been universalized to a level, doesn't mean everyone has to speak it. Especially in a place like Korea where there's barely an expact community or any significant number of English speakers. It would be fine if tourists weren't so entitled a lot of the time.

well i'm going on vacation to your country, i'm not learning your entire language just for that. i understand the thing about saying hello and thank you and please etc. in their language, but they want me to say a whole sentence? lol

when s.koreans come to spain, they always try to speak in english not even in spanish lmao.

Do they expect us to be all "native english speakers"? Like we are from other country = english/american?

I speak german normally and learned to speak english so I can communicate with people of the world. Sure I am not fluent..but please this is embarassing -_- If I had to learn english, then why can't you? You don't even have to be fluent. Also writing down some simple phrases in whatever language won't help you much, if the answer is also in that language..and you got no clue...just saying...
