The only reason why people think it's childish is that they keep focusing on idols. And even idols sometimes break away from their traditional concepts so that still isn't an excuse to say Jpop is childish.

Anyway, why are people stuck on trying to appeal to Western audiences? If I could make bank in one country and walk about freely everywhere else, that be a dream. If the video was trying to show there are other acts than 48G, 46G and MM then good job. If it was trying to show Jpop in a Kpop way then no thanks.

Someone brought this video up in the Arama Discord. It seems as if "not childish" equates to being in line with current Western trends.

Seems like the discord is becoming interesting again. Might venture back.

Why?

Just a personal feeling. I don't like these so called entertainment gossip sites reporting about stupid polls, celebrity nonsense or highlight stuff like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu wearing an indian costume and bothers two native americans lol Should concentrate on more music releases beside the social media idiocy.

Most of the visitors also very negative when it's not about their idol worhsips artists in the comment section. Complaining here and there. But i read them comments not anymore.

But at least the site is good when it's about reporting mainstream music shows. That effort overall i respect of course they put in.

What? I check Arama almost everyday and 95% of the time new posts and articles are about upcoming albums and singles or links to music shows. Once in a blue moon do they report on something frivolous (and interesting) like gossip or drama, and for how much it usually gets clicks and discussion, I'm surprised such posts don't get released more often.

And comments are usually reserved for the weekly Open Post, which are generally quite varied and interesting to go through.

I'm Ronald, the main writer there. I personally can't be bothered to report gossip and whatnot, unless it's something huge. People generally like the gossip more than the music stuff.

People think J-pop = idols like K-pop. I find some J-pop idol groups have childish sounding songs.

I don't really listen to idol groups often in J-pop, I prefer soloists with lyrics I can relate to.

Cute does not necessarily mean childish. Cute could be more accurately described as youthfulness, and Japan values that in general more than any other country. For example, Namie Amuro, is often described as cute, but she's 41 years old, it means she is youthful, it doesn't mean she is childish.

Childish would be something that is lacking in intent, and is primitive. The cute style in J-pop is completely intentional, its all calculated to attract maximum interest from the general public, its not childish, its expresses the ideal of youthfulness. Its not necessarily obnoxious either, rather it is endearing, J-pop is the commodification of endearment (affection). In other words, in Japan, sweetness sells.
