What makes a Kpop group popular?

Aside music imo its a mix of varieties, fashion, members' likeableness, quality mv's, promo, catchy songs and steady concepts plus a rly good strategy to make the group get noticed. and dedicated fandom even if its a small one. I think having your own original touch without relying on trends is also an easy way to be perceived as unique and attract more stans. and yeah if a group is from big 3 they are automatically more noticed and start with more stans than others even if they're not really popular they still have advantage over other rookies.

Exposure, big companies have the upper hand in this case cuz they are recognized so their newer artist for example ultimately get exposure for being associated with other known groups in the company.

The obvious fact is how catchy the song is, groups like Gfriend and momoland hit big because their songs were very catchy

1) Comapny

Doesn't necessarily have to be a huge one.

They just need to know how to use their sometimes limited resources to promote, market and manage you properly and be aware of current trends.

2) Right timing and right place

Basically luck.

3) Songs

Duh. They don't even necessarily have to be good songs just something that has a catchy tune that is easy to listen to.

Just work with the right producers who have a ear for what the people want.

4) Visuals/Group dynamic

5) It's better to not have too many members

6) Building a rabid fanbase

Silent fans are kinda useless especially if they don't buy shit but constantly complain about their faves flopping.

7) Variety and quantity of content

8) The IT factor

Sometimes that's the most powerful factor but that's just something that you have or not

This seems like the key to me.  Being from a big company and/or collaborating with other artists that are already really popular.

Yes finding a niche is very important for any kpop group to become somewhat popular and maintain popularity. It's easier to stand out that way. If a group capitalizes on their strengths like BTS with their hip hop image and strong dancing and Btob with their emotional singing then they can find success. If fans are looking for a certain kind of feeling/concept/song then they know they can rely on these groups to get their fill.

Solid branding captures pretty much everything.

  • fulfilling a music market demand
  • connecting with audiences
  • creating a recognizable brand

Fans are the core of the audience and can contribute to the brand a little but overall, it's up to the company. Big companies do the branding easier than small companies because they already have prior audience connections and brand name value, but a small company like HappyFace still does well fulfilling a market demand with Dreamcatcher
