Ellen DeGeneres revealed in a new interview that she is considering ending her daytime talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The comedian opened up the possibility of walking away from her long-running eponymous series in a new profile with The New York Times.

As The Hollywood Reporter reported earlier this year, DeGeneres took the option to extend her contract in a deal that keeps the show on the air until the summer of 2020. According to the Times, the 60-year-old comedian was close to declining at the time.

In the interview, DeGeneres said that her brother, Vance DeGeneres, wants her to continue on with the show after 2020 because he believes she serves as a hopeful figure in today's divisive political climate. Her wife, Portia de Rossi, however, is encouraging the talk show host to explore new opportunities.

"[De Rossi] gets mad when my brother tells me I can’t stop," DeGeneres told the Times. De Rossi thinks that her spouse has "other things she could tackle," telling the publication, "I just think she’s such a brilliant actress and stand-up [comedian] that it doesn’t have to be this talk show for her creativity."

Added de Rossi: "I don’t see the end of her show as her career ending."

Whether or not she decides to step away from her daytime series for good, DeGeneres is currently focusing her efforts on getting back into comedy. She returns to stand-up in her upcoming Netflix special, Relatable, her first comedy special since HBO's Here and Now in 2003.

"I wanted to show all of me," DeGeneres explained. "The talk show is me, but I’m also playing a character of a talk show host. There’s a tiny, tiny bit of difference."

De Rossi elaborated, telling the Times that DeGeneres is "a bit more complicated than she appears on the show. There's more range of emotion."

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is the top-rated show in the talk genre, growing 7 percent year-over-year among the daytime target demographic of women 25-54, with a 1.6 rating. The show's representatives did not comment in response to the Times story.

I kinda agree with both the brother and Portia. I get that she is a figurehead for spreading kindness and love to one another. With that you serve as a beacon of hope, which is why so many people are fascinated and are a fan of her. Portia saying she can do way more isn't wrong at all. Ellen is obviously talented and has an impressive resume, so why just limit yourself to a talk show when you could do TV roles, more stand up comedy specials, write more books, do a tour, etc.. Overall it's what Ellen wants that matters and I doubt they won't not be supportive of her regardless of the decision.

ELLEN! I can understand why she would want to though she's up to season 16 now I think? And she's 60 too. She should just enjoy her life now. You don't want to keep on grinding like this because eventually the thing you love doing will turn out to be something you despise.
