Is this gen of mid tier company girl groups weak?

Second gen got some gems like 4minute, Davichi, Secret, Sistar, Apink, T-ARA, AOA, Girls Day, Exid and many, many more who got several hits and was recognized national wide.

But so far this generation of mid-tier companies got only Gfriend, Mamamoo (both from new companies), G-Idle (from rstablished company) and Momoland (who seems to be one hit wonders). Others has their strenghts but have no hits and arent really recognized imo. And we are already almost in fifth year of this gen.

Wonder what happened...

Disclaimer: Personally I love most of the groups, its not dis for them. More like curiosity about possibly bad managment choices.

Um. You literally forgot like 15 groups who all serve bops. And gfriend cant possibly still be counted as pure mid tier.

gfriend and mamamoo are midtier on what planet?

when someone says midtier I think oh my girl and wjsn

op's the type that puts any non-big 3 gg into mid tier judging from their 2nd gen line-up kek hurrplz.png

i mean i can only pray my faves get as much success as 'mid tier' groups like sistar and t-ara and apink etc. so it's honestly a compliment, really ahmagahplz.png

Their companies are mid-tier not the groups. Op is questioning why the number of successful groups from mid-tier companies are so low in comparison to 2nd gen. Mamamoo and Gfriend are successful from mid-tier companies but they’re asking why groups like wjsn and omg don’t have any hit songs from a mid-tier company whereas 2nd gen groups from mid-tier companies like AOA and 4minute DID have hit songs/ were popular.

Because people overhyped the popular ones.

^ I think this is the reason

gfriend and mamamoo are top tier.

also sistar, tara, and apink were considered top tier ggs and at one point 4minute, secret, and aoa were too.

Yop. Thats what Im basically talking about. This gen lack in the area of top groups from mid tier companies(without backing of big3 companies). :derp:

Dont think that Red Velvet, Twice and BlackPink are so terribly overhyped in comparision with SNSD, Wonder Girls and 2NE1. All of them was overhyped by fans. Even though there was still even KARA, Fx, MissA. So lets say there was even more big company groups. Yet mid tier companies smashed too.

Like... Now we got big number of groups with first win but without any recognition. Like as far as AfterSchool was unlucky with their wins county they got more recognized songs as lets say OMG who has the same win count.

That's what I've been saying all this time. The big 3 will always do well but they alone can't sustain the idol scene, it needs more versatility. Public has lost a lot of interest in kpop as a whole

Like what if the big 3 can't make an event or concert, can the others bring in a decent size buzz/attendees? Outside a couple groups most probably not.

Aren't AOA and EXID considered 3rd gen already though? Since they debuted in 2012.

But in general I agree that 2nd gen ggs even from mid-tier companies had bigger hits. The hits from Gfriend, Mamamoo, Momoland, etc don't seem to have the same impact as the hits from T-ara, Sistar, Secret, 4 minute, etc

I would say AOA, Exid etc are mid gen groups. Imo 3rd gen of girl groups started in 2014. In 2012 second gen was still peaking.

For boy groups it would be the 2012 with debut of EXO or 2013.

off topic but so people in OH consider AOA 2nd gen but EXO 3rd gen?

Oh I see you already answered but this is pretty funny how generations are different for ggs and bgs lol

Saturated market and A lot of smaller companies relies on survival shows these days instead of trying to bring in something to compete against girl group from bigger companies. Even with older vs new gen boy groups I feel like there's a bit more variety when it comes to the music older gen puts out meanwhile boy groups these days follows the same formula that worked for other boy groups
