dvang 23,884
'edge of tomorrow' is set to become one of the biggest box office bombs of 2014 just like the lone ranger in 2013 but the key difference is that edge of tomorrow is actually a great movie and is getting rave reviews not just from critics but also from casual moviegoers and even non-sci fi fans. so what's the reason for the failure: the movie did not have much hype and tom cruise is no longer has the star power he had back in 80's,90's and early 00's although there were glimmers of it were seen in movies like mi:4 and the most important reason is that there are already too many big movies which are still running in cinemas namely godzilla,x men:dofp and maleficent...... so what are your opinions on how much hype matters over the actual content in the entertainment industry today ?? thot 1,829
Hype is extremely important. The problem with Edge of Tomorrow is that it's competing with other movies with similar or more hype. But with hype, if the movie doesn't meet expectations it will tank in the long term.
Dickâ„¢ 1,747
Ofc it is very very important. Let's take Kpop for example. Teasers, all dem leaks for SM groups or versus thingy that YGent made actually did work. The hype helps to make fans feel curious and it will draw them to get near and finally become source of money. Suzuran 353
so what are your opinions on how much hype matters over the actual content in the entertainment industry today ?? I don't know. Look at something like Prometheus. That movie was hyped up like crazy, but the actual content was mediocre which in the end hurt the film. On the other hand The Avengers benefited from the hype so I would say it completely depends. What I think is the best thing for a movie is word of mouth though. As for Edge of Tomorrow its problem is it looks very similair to Elysium, Oblivion etc.

I think movie goers are smart enough these days to wait a few days after the movie is released to see what the general public has to say.
DocumentaLy 6,033
Why do people even put Tom Cruise in movies anymore? It's not 1991...

dvang 23,884
Too bad nobody cares. His personal life completely killed his career. 'killed his career' would be an overstatement,he still releases some good movies from time to time but yeah he's not the same star he was in 80's and 90's
...... 3,962
Too bad nobody cares. His personal life completely killed his career. this. honestly, it's not hype.... not here.... It's the star....it's not as simple as "his star power has faded" .... People just genuinely don't like Tom Cruise. His personal life has essentially destroyed his public approval. Oblivion pooped the bed stateside....Jack Reacher pooped the bed everywhere....and Rock of Ages was just poop... this is not coincidence w/in timeline of his downward public spiral. His last uncontested successful film stateside (Valkryie = questionable given the promotion), since all his craziness, was M:I-GP ... and that's because it's franchise. I guarantee, had his film had a different lead... more people would have come out to see it.

RainStormRaider 446
Hype is what got Avatar to box office glory. I mean c'mon, Unobtanium? So yeah, fuck yeah, hype matters. Plus Tom Cruise has been releasing quite a few duds and no one really likes him any more so yeah, obviously. I will be watching this one once I escape the Arctic for the summer and I'll be watching it for Em Blunt.
Guest Kami_removed
I see like 5 commericals in 1 hour on tv about it how doesnt it have hype
Dandelion Wine 1,540
Hype is so important because it snowballs...more and more people get interested as their friends, families, and coworkers speak about them...just look at what happened to Frozen. Soooo many people saw it because it was hailed as "the next Lion King" or something, but lots of people found it very cliched/predictable/basic...didn't stop it from becoming #1 in theaters. Hype is a force to be reckoned with.
Charisma 47
Is it bad that the last movie with him I can think of is Vanilla Sky? That is bad. You didn't even mention Minority Report or Collateral. The last movie I saw starring Tom Cruise was Oblivion and this movie looks very similar to that.

parasyte 114
word of mouth will get this movie hype. people just don't care about tom cruise anymore. I still see him as a talented and hard-working actor (he's done all the dangerous stunts himself) and I respect him for entertaining me watching his movie. i guess the time-traveling; aliens; a non ensemble casts (only Tom Cruise has the star power here) are what put-off the movie-goers to see this great movie with great storyline I watched it and I personally enjoy it, lots of humor, actions, less romance, amazing visuals and I give this movie 9/10 and it would've been perfect if not for the ending.
