When talking about talent in a KPOP discussion about idols....

Do you only discuss singing, dancing, and rapping skills?

Do you think any other talent is worth being discussed?

Do you consider a member of a group untalented if they arent particularly skilled in any of the three areas above?

Sometimes I also discuss the ability to play instruments, the ability to compose good songs (although this is sort of based on opinion), and variety skills.

but really I try not to talk about how talented each member is. I rather talk about if they bring positive things to the table as a member.

For me no. That's why I hardly classify anyone as being 'untalented' since for me an idol is not necessarily just a performer.

If that idol can make me roll around laughing despite his/her lack of musical talent I would still consider the person as a talented idol.

Singing, dancing, idc about rapping, but performing is really important. Like stage presence, charisma etc. It can really make up for lacking vocal or dancing skills.

I tend to only focus on Singing or Rapping or Dancing...

But there are Variety Idols like Kwanghee he is horrible musician but he is funny

Also Acting Idols who are only good at acting or there main focus is to act like SUJU Siwon

Just because they are not talented musically dose not mean they are not talented in another area of entertainment...

Just My Opinion

I focus mainly on singing and dancing. I won't touch rapping 99% of the time because I really have no idea whatsoever what constitutes a good rapper aside from writing lyrics.

It depends on the group/act. I think songwriting and composing is worth being discussed if said person/people has a big hand in it. I'm still on the fence when it comes to the social skills idols have.

Not necessarily. I think the view of talent tends to become skewed when talking about Kpop idols. I like to think the majority of idols are talented in one way or another, whether or not it's overwhelmingly so is to be debated.

Discussions about talent should predominantly focus on an idols ability to rap, sing, dance and their ability to function within a live setting. Producing, composition and writing lyrics should also be included when gauging or discussing an idols talent but it currently isn't prominent or a fixture within the idol industry. Variety skills shouldn't be included or mentioned in regards to music or musicality because it's a different set of skills that don't function within music outside of acting or visual appeals.

I'm with those who like to focus on what each member brings to the group as a positive thing and not necessarily focus all around talent, although I have had talent discussions before because why not? It an be interesting. But when it comes to something like KPop, I believe there is more involved than just singing & dancing as really they are just all around entertainers in some instances, so I think there's other things worth discussing as well.

There's also things like stage presence, camera presence, modeling ability, speaking ability, variety skills...

For a singing group they only really need to be able to sing. Rapping and dancing are bonus skills.

However, for idols, they usually have to have a little bit more to be really successful.

Well since kpop groups are idols they are required to be able to, either as a group individually, show a variety of talents in comparison to just your run of the mill singer.

An idol often has talents in singing, dancing, rapping, acting, modelling, variety, foreign languages and a lot of other things. It's just that for the majority of discussions on these boards talent just for some reason intrinsically means singing ability and/or dancing ability if specified.

I think it's important that the idol brings something valuable to the group, even if it isn't their vocal talent. I think that members that have a lot of charisma and stage presence are important to a group, even if they lack in some other areas. It's not just about their music, but their image.

I'm curious if any idols have successfully crossed the line (in Korean public opinion) from being an idol to being a respected singer --- or is it once an idol, always an idol?

The Hallyu (how long will it last) thread here talks about how in Korea the interest in kpop is dying out and the general public (not the usual high school/middle school demographic) is more interested/buys more songs from soloist singers and non-idols.  (There's also an omona opinion article on it written by a foreign exchange student in Korea who was saying the same things about how kpop is actually more popular overseas than with the general public in Korea).
