[BILLBOARD] WINNER's Mino Leans Into the Past on 'Fiance': Watch the Traditionally Inspired Music Video

Mino of Korean boy band WINNER released a captivating music video for his new single “Fiancé†on Monday (Nov. 26).

 

For the lead single from his debut solo album XX, Mino (Song Minho) blends hip-hop with elements of trot, a genre of Korean pop music known for its two-beat rhythm and distinct vocals. The WINNER rapper relays his desires toward the woman he loves over an uproarious beat and hypnotic strings, while layering the song with samples from the song “Soyangang Maiden,†originally recorded in 1969 by Kim Taehee.

 

“Fiancé†was released with a music video that similarly blends the past and present, serving up mesmerizing aesthetics inspired by traditional Korean culture. Alternating between fields and a throne room, Mino depicts a "Fiancé†searching for his woman and wears a variety of modern and historic outfits, going so far as to don some of the pieces worn by Joseon dynasty royal men during wedding ceremonies. Throughout much of the video, he is surrounded by women, whom he interacts with in a variety of ways as he performs the song and choreography. The video ends with him collapsing as he declares, “I’ll go wherever you are. I’ll go.â€

 

The song features lyrics written by Mino and was co-written with Future Bounce and Texu.

 

“Fiancé†is the lead single on Mino’s first solo album, XX, also released Monday. Unlike many albums put out by K-pop artists, Mino’s debut LP features an explicit warning label, both on international streaming sites and in Korea, where it received an “X†rating, according to The Korea Herald. “I really didn’t see the X rating coming,†the artist said during a press conference in Seoul on Monday. “Some of the songs may have got the rating because I wanted to have fun and do what I wanted while making the album with an open mind.â€

 

Mino will be touring Stateside with WINNER in early 2019.

Mino is a genius lyricist and King of historical concepts, he did the same 3 years ago with Shoot (infinite challenge collab) but Fiancé is even more stunning cuz he truly went all out with the concept and got to do whatever he wanted. The MV is bomb and the fact he incorporated old Korean language in his lyrics & sampled a trot song so well is even more impressive. Stan talent, Stan Artist Song Mino!
