Holiday In Italy?

Hey everyone,

I'm planning a holiday in Italy in September, and I can't put my finger on which place to go to.

I've been to Kos in Greece and I'm looking for somewhere similar, in terms of weather and the town center for shopping etc.

I'm going to pile a list of my wants and if you guys can point in the right direction that would be great.

I want somewhere nice a hot at the time (doesn't need to be super hot, just enough for sun bathing)

Shopping - Street Stalls for clothes, ones that sell cheap clothing and fake designer goods (I'm not going for that but it helps paint the picture of the type of street stalls I'm looking for)

Nightlife - Restaurants and nice bars

Be able to walk around the town and enjoy the town centre etc

Somewhere beautiful and not a regular looking city like London.

I want to enjoy Italian culture too

The places I thought about going where Venice and Milan, but looking online I'm not so sure now as there are so many different places. I want it be a place lots of tourists go though please.

I adore Venice. I've been around Italy (though I never made it to Cinque Terre, which you might want to look into). Yes, it's touristy, but the peaceful canals and lack of mopeds make up for it.

I don't remember there being any sort of streetmarket (maybe I wasn't looking in the right place), but it's known for Murano glass, and you can visit that island (tho ferry tickets are expensive as hell imo). It has shopping on a bridge on the largest canal in the city, but it's more like boutique, arts and crafts, and souvenir stuff than leather and fake goods type of shopping.

You also have to be careful where you eat, because most places are tourist traps. Check tripadvisor first.

I spent most of my time wandering around the city, which is so unlike other Italian cities and towns both in urban areas and in the countryside. I absolutely loved the view from the Campanile di San Marco, and I had some nice food in the Jewish quarter.

Definitely consider it!

Thanks for that, it sounds great, I was thinking of Venice so theres a good chance Ill go there.

Sorrento & Capri are gorgeous - I wish I was back there now

I don't think I'll be going to Sorrento as the person I'm going with has been there already, but what about Capri? Would it be good for me?

Cinque Terre. It's a set of five towns connected by a trail. It's good, beaches all around and if you feel more adventurous, you can hike. I did a summer abroad last year in Italy and yeah, it's a good place. And although not in Tuscany, it's near enough to experience the Tuscan getaway that is to die for. As for cities, Florence is the nearest big city as far as I know.

Also if you want somewhere south of Rome (well Naples is the nearest city), there is the famed Amalfi Coast. It's good but I stayed in Sorrento, took the ferry to get to Capri, then another ferry to Amalfi. Not sandy beaches but still nice.

This is what I really learned in my 5-week stay there, if you really want to experience the culture, STAY AWAY FROM BIG CITIES. If you want to go to Milan, make Lake Como your base then take the train to Milan. If you want to go to Florence, make Siena or any of the hill towns be your base. But, but, but, but, Rome is the only exception. That place is wonderful.

And as a side note, the best place I have been to in Italy was Siena.

Have fun in planning! I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Thankyou, I'm only going for a long weekend actually though so I'm thinking I'll just stay in one place or visit another place for one day only maybe. Lake Como does look frigging gorgeous and we do love the lake district and I've read that its like the Italian Lake District, so that sounds nice.

Definitely would't recommend Milan for a vacation lol.

Venice is really beautiful for foreigners usually but the night life is pretty much dead since most bars closes at midnight (yes i'm not joking).

I would recommend Rome and Florence which are the best of both worlds (art/culture and fun/great food)

Why not for Milan?

Nightlife doesn't bother me really as I'm going with my mum so we won't be drinking late anyway. I'm just hoping for a nice restaurant in the evening.

Also I've been researching and I'm starting to narrow it down between Como and MIlan together, Venice or somewhere on the south as I want it to be hot.

Well it's more a city....for work? Everyone is super busy, traffic is crazy, there is a lot of smog and it's rarely sunny... I just wouldn't go there on vacation

And it would be boring, for a tourist; there's not a lot to see - just Piazza Duomo, the Castello Sforzesco and Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper. Nothing else.

Ah right I see, so maybe If I was going to Italy for a while just go there for a day and see it.

I'm thinking Venice might be my winner then, would you say it will be nice and hot there during September?
