what would you eat if money is tight

Let's just say hypothetically i don't have a lot of money laying around and i don't know how long this situation is going to last, yet i keep on losing weight because i don't have a lot to spend on food. What cheap, affordable food would you suggest for me to eat? bonus point if it's considerably healthy and won't kill me in the long run.

It really depends on where you live but a carton of eggs, a loaf of bread and jam/peanut butter are fairly cheap. You can get all that in 5 dollars and it lasts awhile

 

Its protein, carbs and something sweet.

 

When I lived away from home I lived on instant noodles but that's the obvious answer. I also had canned baked beans with bread.

 

Edit: Frozen veg is cheap too. It's 2 dollars a packet and can last a week if you want to prioritise health

I'm on a tight budget and I eat fried rice or pasta for almost every meal. A 30 lb bag of rice can last you an entire month (or two if you're not sharing the rice) and you can buy 2 dozen eggs and a bag of frozen vegetables for cheap. I bought my 30 lb bag of rice on sale at my local Korean market for only $12. Pasta is also pretty cheap--like I've bought pasta for as little as 99 cents per box before.

I feel like shit when I dont eat healthy foods but since I freelance some months are really rough. I kind of figured out a balanced, cheap grocery list that also has a decent shelf life. Everything is USD:

 

Expensive:

1. Rice $4

  I live alone so I usually buy those small bags of rice and it costs me up to $4 USD.

 

2. Sausage $4-$5

  Comes in a pack of 5. I portion out 1/2 sausage per meal =10 days of meat-based protein. Any kind of meat like ground beef that you can ration works but I use sausage since its already seasoned.

 

Cheap:

1. Frozen Spinach $0.90-$1.50

  Its super cheap but also a very healthy vegetable. It can come frozen chopped in a bag, or condensed into a paper box. I usually do the paper box.

 

2. Frozen broccoli, Corn, Peas $2

  Always look around to find the cheapest brand. 1 bag doesn't last very long so I kind of use them as a 'topping' and spinach is my base vegetable since its cheaper and you are sold more per serving,

 

3. Canned tomatoes $0.60-$1

  Cheap and possible to buy some in cans that don't require a can opener. I usually save these until im out of food. and make soups with what small portions of the other stuff I have left.

 

4. Canned beans $0.90-$1.20

  I use this with every meal, since it helps me feel full and I can use less of the expensive stuff. I stock up on cans of mixed beans and kidney beans.

 

BONUS: spam eggs and rice. I used to do this a few years ago but I cant handle eating too much spam anymore, but thats like food for the apocalypse so I always keep a can somewhere

 

 

So typically I cook the meat, and then add beans, spinach and some vegetables and eat it with the rice on the side. I feel pretty satisfied afterwards and usually am not hungry for hours. Because of my lifestyle I eat once a day, but I will eat twice if Im active/busy. I dont really eat bread, and I buy dairy products on occasion. This is what I stick to when I have like no money, though

Canned foods(grean beans, corn, tomato sauce, chicken, fish etc. Canned fruit is cheaper than fresh fruit too)

Bread

Peanut butter

Jam

Eggs

Milk(depends on what store, but I've seen a gallon of milk be as low as $1~2)

Ramen

Bananas

Discounted prepared foods at bakery section if your stores have that

Chicken broth+fresh veg
