Why do people here say "Jap" when referring to Japanese things?

i stopped using it when i found out it was derogatory. It doesn't matter if i'm not japanese or the if the person i'm talking to isn't japanese or doesn't take offense, it's offensive to some people so i'd rather not use it at all.

For as normal as the N-word has become (even among non-black people), i feel the same about that and never say the word either.

1) They don't know it's a derogatory term

2) It's shorter

XD

Exactly. In a lot of countries, it's not widely known that this English term is a derogatory term.

quoting the OP wiki link

In the United States, Japanese Americans have come to find the term controversial or offensive, even when used as an abbreviation.[1] In the past, Jap was not considered primarily offensive; however, during and after the events of World War II, the term became derogatory.

It's a derogatory term only mostly in the USA so people from elsewhere don't necessary know it.

I used it once in H8 for that reason, it was shorter and I didn't know. Then someone told me it could be seen as a derogatory term therefore now I only use JPN instead.
