What is toxic masculinity?

From my understanding It's when typical / encouraged male behaviour negatively impacts either the male or those around them e.g Male falls and hurts his leg, is in a lot of pain but showing pain is considered unmanly and so they pretend they're not in pain and wallow in agony for fear of having their masculinity questioned. It tends to come up a lot with young boys, "oh you can't wear that pink shirt / nail polish it's for girls" even if the boy wants to wear it, toxic masculinity means he can't.

Ah... UGH omgwtf.png

It's saying things like "be a man", "man up!", "men shouldn't cry." Phrases like that can damage people

I should stop saying this to my brother then.

1. if you look nice outside you are girly/gay. real men don't care about their own looks at all, must take within 5 minutes to get ready, and any visible effort is a minus (a few pre-approved items are acceptable for special occasions)

2. if you wear anything with non-black colors you are girly (unless it's a polo shirt and you're wearing it with cargo shorts)

3. don't express emotions at all they are for girls

4. you should be able to punch your bullies in the face (if you dare to have them) and if you don't you are a whimp

5. if you get beaten up badly start crying you have forfeit your manhood for eternity. man up

6. you must know all the rules to football and have a favorite team. if you don't, at least know basketball (baseball is gay as of the year 1998)

7. if the non-food product you are buying is also used by women, make sure you are buying the one that says "for men" on the packaging or you are a girl

^^just a few examples (most unspoken) from being raised in Texas.

the US is a pretty extreme example of toxic masculinity, though.

Forcing men into this stereotype of being strong, ending up repressing their emotions. It's extremely unhealthy because it cause stress to build up which is why you tend to see more mass shooters lashing out being men. Also men have a higher murder, suicide, and depression rate.

When it comes to rape victims, men are less likely to speak out for fear of being shame for being a victim. It's disgusting how people make joke when female teachers have sex with young boys because "it's any man's dream" and completely disregard that the boy was not developed enough to deal with being sexually taken advantage of

Honestly even the way society socialize boys of being masculine is why they don't have as much close friendship compare to women imo. Like speaking in general, it is easier for women to confide in each others, to hugs, to find physical platonic comfort with each other. If men do that, they're considered gay, or feminine, and alot of men even find it awkward to hug each other even as friends.

When feminists say we should get rid of patriarchy, alot of men should support it tbh. There's no benefits from the way it treat both women and men by forcing us to conform to specific "gender norm"

this.

it's exactly why men have dumbass slang words like "bro-hug" and "bromance" to minimize or excuse the display of emotion (which allows them to retain status).

tbh making these kinds of excuses for your emotions is much more childish, but it's either that or remain distant and grow up unable to discuss emotional issues (which is kind of what i am trying to overcome)
