Major Kohaku Rejections: TOKIO Streak for Most Consecutive Performances Interrupted, Yonezu Kenshi also "Unexpected"

In previous information it was reported that Yonezu Kenshi was an expected performer, but on the lists that announced the Kohaku performers, his name wasn't there. Fans who were surprised at this said things such as "What about Yonezu Kenshi?" and "This rejection is unexpected."

I read he has some kind of autism so it's hard for him to appear in public.

Didn’t know that but power to him for saying no if that’s how it is. Either way there’s many who simply don’t want to attend so to me that would’ve been just as valid. :)

In the interview in ROCKIN'ON JAPAN recently, you stated you "had high-functioning autism." What did you feel about that?
 
Yonezu: I didn't know that as a child. So the description of "had high-functioning autism" sounds strange. You can't put a past tense on it. Though apparently it is innate, and isn't something to be cured. But I was confirmed to be such a person after the age of 20. I felt emotionally strange, I went to the hospital, and that's what they diagnosed. At the time, it was an "I see" or "that makes sense" sort of feeling.

I never understood why TOKIO kept getting invited since they were never that relevant from a musical standpoint. Even with a JE quota, you'd think JE would prioritise their other groups like KAT-TUN or NEWS before them so this is a long time coming.

TOKIO has a strong public presence (with their variety shows) and they are relatively stable (in terms of member roster) and clean (no scandals until 2018), whereas NEWS and KAT-TUN constantly had issues with their member roster or had relatively small scandal.
