soyundorito 828
Why are Americans (tho not only them but english speakers mostly) care so much about other people "race", at this, what even is race? as a latina I had never been asked about my ethnicity or race at all, until i began to use social media, then i found myself being asked by random people on the internet about it when they talked to me, would people treat me differently if i were asian black, white, etc? + some can't understand that i don't identify myself as anything (I just say im from x country), i had gotten into arguments with people over this because they say i was hidding my race(?) going as far as googling my country predominant race and calling me names other than that, im still schooked that they think "gringo" means white when it actually means someone from the US or someone who speak english, yet they argument that its only for whites... why? BTW, I'm chilean (South american)
asseater116 176
different countries have different sociocultural cues and words may mean differently varying on them. you also have to look at the history of a country and see how it was divided and by what were people exploited about. for america, it was and is predominantly a racial issue so there's that. Gringo means someone from the US doesn’t matter the color, we use it instead of “American†because we are all Americans so we won’t call y’all that, we call gringo any person who speak English tho lol

In the USA's cultural world view, race is an important and fundamental aspect in determining a person's worth. And then background, and gender, and so on. It's horrible I know. That's the short version, the long one will come another day. because we have so many people from so many different cultures living here Lmao no. I grew up with people from all continents here and nobody did or said the shit I hear people do or say in the US regarding "race". ___ PS: races don't exist in the human species, kids
Corysilk 16
Because other countries like to pretend they are color blind when really they just ignore their poc population. How many black or dark skinned Chileans have graced your television screen in roles outside of "maid #2" or "street thug"? At least the U.S. gives POC visibility and representation. Can’t say anything about black actors because until recently there weren’t many black people here yet they had added roles for the Colombians and Haitians that had come here
Digiwon 5,843
Never got it either, aside the japanese, german and italians here everyone else is mixed af Actually even these three lol its easy to find ppl who don't look like what their name suggest in Brazil. That's why I don't get about americans presuming we should know everything about their culture and getting offended if we don't
