This is an interesting topic actually and I wish it would be discussed more, even here. A few years ago a book was released about obsessive fan culture, I can’t remember the title right now but it basically delved into the more disturbing psychological aspects of adoration and in short order, fan culture and how it’s used for marketing strategies etc. It wasn’t the most intellectual book however, i hope something much more complex is written eventually. Yeah.... But so far tough luck. It's definitely an interesting psychological field, if there's a study done by certified doctors or researchers they probably would have a lot of fun studying sasaeng, anti-fan, and akgae(who generally somekind of hybrid between sasaeng&anti-fan).

 

While I'm no doctor in mental health matters, I personally think these 3 types of "fan" have differences and similar traits that overlap with each other. The obsession is definitely there- like Sasaeng choose to obsess over someone they like, anti-fan someone they decide to hate, while akgae seem to alternate between sasaeng-ish toward their fave and anti-fan ish toward their fave's groupmates. The interesting differences that's apparent to me is the decision they make to focus on love or hatred, and I wonder if there are some environmental factors coupled with personal tragedies, personality type and maybe even brain- differences that cause them to choose to be sasaeng/anti/akgae. is it possible to alter their choice with drugs and therapies, so a sasaeng can become an anti-fan, or an akgae can become more devoted to loving or hating? Or can they change target, what makes them choose a target? It'd be interesting to study these people.

 

 

All in all, they should be observed and treated by mental health professionals imo. Especially since they usually stop living their real life to focus on their target of obsession- and this means they're more likely to waste years of their prime time serving these sick obsessions of theirs. Also, these kind of people are literally walking ticking bombs. I can see them exploding in ugly ways. Maybe attempt to kill or harm their target of hatred- or if they're obsessed with love, they'd be danger to their target when the target develop his/her own love life. They can even explode and become mass-shooter if gun is allowed in SK, I think. This is very different from normal fans with healthy minds, who generally manage to live properly, can mind their personal stuffs, and not obsessed over a target. Or two.
