Khalil Fong (方大åŒ, born July 14, 1983) is an soul/R&B singer and songwriter from Hong Kong. He was born in Hawaii and his family moved to Shanghai when he was 6. His father (an American-born Chinese from San Francisco, California) wanted Khalil to learn more about Chinese culture. 6 years later, they moved to Guangzhou and lived for about 2 years. Afterwards, they moved to Hong Kong. When he was 16, he sent demos, which he had written, to music producers. (He was most interested in Warner Music Group.) 4 years later, Warner Music Hong Kong finally recruited him as a new rising star of 2005. - last.fm

Khalil Fong Wrap-up

Because Khalil is a guy, you can safely assume that i didn't listen to him before he was requested. I've always liked the songs he wrote for other artists, mostly Fiona's songs, but I never checked him out. The first song i heard from him was Dangerous World, which i liked a lot. Then i looked him up on youtube and immediately fell in love with BB88. His sound is pretty unique in the cpop world.

He has a nice range of styles but somehow all seem to fit his sound. From the smooth rnb songs to the upbeat catchy jazzy pop songs, and even a few hiphop songs, he does them all pretty well. I do tend to like his more upbeat songs though. The slower songs are nice but his singing isn't very...dynamic i guess you would say. When those songs aren't good, they're pretty dull. I know some people prefer his slower smoother music though *shrugs*

His new album is pretty solid but i do one or two issues. Even songs that i really like, such as the title song Dangerous World, there are problems with them. With Dangerous World i feel like there's no climax and also ends too soon. It's a pretty short song and ends before you know it, but not in a good way. It feels like it's building to the climax at the end but that's where the song actually ends. It's only about 3 minutes long if you don't count all that nonsense afterwards. Black White & Grey has the same "no climax" problem. He sings the same way throughout the entire song. I don't know if i'm making it a bigger deal than it is, but it kinda bugs me.

Whatever the problems I have with the album, it doesn't change the fact that it's a good album. People should check it out if they haven't already. Also check out Back to Wonderland. I might actually like Back to Wonderland more than Dangerous World. Most of the list is comprised of songs from those two albums with a few here and there from his older ones.

Sigh. Late thread. Last minute writeup. Rambling trying to find something to say. At least we're done now. If you haven't noticed at the top of the OP i put a link to a Google Doc. Make your requests in there from now on if you have any.

Khalil Fong is definitely one of a kind, one of the few C-Pop artists I keep coming back to listen.

As for requests...

I want you to do one for Alan Dawa Dolma, but the problem is the fact that she is a singer of both J-Pop and C-Pop.

i actually already have Alan on the list. She's on row#18 in the doc.

I didn't know her name and just put Alan.

Oh?!

Wait so how are you going to review her?  Are you only going to review her Chinese songs?  Her Chinese discography is actually quite weak compared to her Japanese counterpart.  And her new Chinese songs are quite disappointing...  *sigh* I wished she had transferred to Avex Taiwan after Avex China was dissolved by their parent company.  Instead she ended up at Yueha Music, the infamous Chinese record label that took in Hangeng after he left SM.  Fortunately, she still has good connections with the people she worked with in Japan.  For instance, Kazuhito Kikuchi, Alan's main composer when Avex China was still around.  Kazuhito Kikuchi has been known as a main composer for many of the top J-Pop artists (e.g. Ayumi Hamasaki, Koda Kumi, etc).  It's awesome how they still keep in touch.  I hope to see them do music collaborations in the near future.

oh her japanese material is wayy better than her chinese. I agree with that. She's supposedly working on a mandarin album last i heard.

I can include both languages or just focus on mandarin. Not a big deal. I included Vanness' japanese music when i did him.

I literally made an account JUST to say how much I stan for this boy. I'm glad people like you are starting to discover him with "Dangerous World". It's an absolutely amazing album, easily his best imo. All of his albums are pretty great though, so if you're planning on looking into his work, it's well worth it. He's BEYOND talented, and his stuff is so different from other C-pop... Actually, it's just proper R&B, and that's so uncommon in Chinese music... He's my absolute favorite Chinese artist and the only one I really check for. ugh I just love him sfm. Thanks for giving him a bit of spotlight lol. :')

OMG! Me too! I just created my account to stan for him and a few other of my fave C-pop artists. Haha. He deserves the recognition, a lot more than a lot of manufactored "idols" who can barely sing...

Finally a Khalil Fong threadIII :ahmagah: :ahmagah: :ahmagah:

He's my favorite Mandarin singer of all time and he properly gives justice to the R&B genre. R&B just so happens to be my favorite genre of music so I was immediately drawn to his music.

In all honesty, I personally did not enjoy his latest album "Dangerous World". I only liked four tracks off of the album with "No Love feat. Miss Ko" and "Lights Up" being my favorite tracks. His previous albums are stellar though.

LOVE SONG

this is his breakout hit..the song that made him relevant

his songs and singing isn't very dynamic....so not my cup of tea, IMO, but it's better than most of what i hear nowadays coming from the mainstream..
