Did 3rd gen start getting talked about around when TWICE debuted?

I feel like no-one really acknowledged the 3rd gen as they do now pre-TWICE, this ain't biased or for shits and gigs it's just an observation?

2014-early 2015 was an awkward time period I feel so late-2015-early 2016 was when everyone really started off 3rd gen observing, mid-2016 was also the time when the top 5 ggs was completed with BLACKPINK's debut

Maybe it's because pre-TWICE a lot of 2nd gen groups were still active and at the top of the game so the actual 3rd gen didn't really take off while they were around

Kinda like how the 2017-2018 debuts are 4th gen but no-one really calls them it

where's that jaejoong gif where he talks about how stupid these gen things are and no one actually knows it?

Oh yeah I know, it's just fandom based stuff, but like I just mean it was an awkward transition time in 2014-2015

Pretty sure that 3rd gen started in 2012 in general .

Yeah I didn't mean start, I changed my title now

I agree. I feel like Red Velvet are a good example of the 'awkward period'. From what I remember, they were not really observed during their debut, it was only around Russian Roulette era that they gained more attention both from the gp and i-fans.

OP do you mean when people started realizing that 3rd gen was predominant?

gfriend and twice started smashing and blackpink had a successful debut so I guess 2015-2016. Also in 2016 a lot of big second gen groups started disbanding and that played a role in people recognizing the generation change I suppose

It’s been around a while. I think 2016 was just the turning point and when it became apparent. EXO was the beginning of a new wave of popular acts that matched older groups. 2016 had the rise of BTS, TWICE, and BLACKPINK and those groups established the new hallyu wave that pushed towards Japan, SEA, Western countries. With EXO, BTS, TWICE, RV, and BP being at the forefront, it became apparent the old generation of idols were no longer the leading forces.

no, there are threads talking about 3rd gen around 2014

like this one

the thing is that before people used call groups from 2010 onwards as 3rd gen, but it changed along the way

yeahh the transitions are so weird and confusing, thanks for the insight

so groups like that have now gone into the 2nd gen / 2.5 gen

Kind of? I fell out of Kpop in like 2013-4 after the jessica departure. Then came back two years after Twice debuted and were coming with CU. Didn’t know any other 3rd gen group and thought Twice was just one of the starters
