Is Kpop all about girl groups now?

It feels like Kpop girl groups rule the Kpop scene these days  We have TWICE, BLACKPINK, RV, MOMOLAND etc slaying either digitally, physically or overseas. Their MV views hitting 100m is a normal feat for them. We also have monster girl group rookies like IDLE and IZONE who both have already achieved so much and the fight for ROTY this year is insane. This is all a sign of healthy competition.

I can't say the same with the current state of Kpop boy groups though. BTS are in a league of their own right now while many Kpop boy groups, even from the biggest agencies are showing signs of slowing down or weakness due to poor management and marketing. There is just not enough competition in the boy group category. Physical sales is all they got to show off and these sales don't reflect whether the general public actually likes them or not.

Do u feel like we're living in an era where girl groups rule Kpop?

This is not new. When a boy group is at the top, they leave no room for other bgs since their fans tend to be loyal to only one group. This is why in all Kpop generations you see one or two bgs with a legendary status and a bunch of girl groups that achieved a moderate status of fame.

The public has always preferred girl groups. But that doesn't mean boy groups haven't been getting a better eye in the public either. See: iKON, WINNER, Block B etc.

The current status of boy groups is very small of a pool though in terms of "big" success, but it's not unsurprising given BTS creating a bar of their own. It's also harder for nugu boy groups to be taken seriously vs. nugu girl groups.

It's why you have girl groups like EXID or Momoland (or even Crayon Pop for that short time) getting viral. Boy groups just don't. The public doesn't take them seriously.

I really liked what GGs have released so far this year and overall they've been better than boy groups musically

but let's talk about the important thing, MONEY, who gain more money? Boy groups

and I agree with what Zamo said, it ain't nothing new

and of course BTS remain a league of their own

It's always been like that though? GGs (even from non Big3 companies) have always had bigger digital hits and more public recognition and boygroups are more dependent of fandom (minus a few exceptions). It also depends of the year. Last year for example was pretty lackluster for ggs with only the usual Big 4-5 doing well, while there was more bg hits and more hype in general with W1 and other broduce related acts. This year was the opposite.

Some new bgs have potential though. Ateez debuted with 2 bops and the new Jellyfish group is super interesting too imo.

agreed. in the sense that we're seeing more bgs reach unusual heights digitally and a rise in physical sales for ggs i feel like the playing field may be leveling a bit on those fronts.
