Who do you think is going to be on Kohaku this year?

It's around that time. I think the list will come out sometime while I'm in Japan, so I might as well ask it now. Who is going to debut? Who is going to be dropped? Who is going to return?

I do see BTS debuting, seeing as how NHK is trying to attract the youth market. I see DA PUMP returning due to how massive "U.S.A." I see Yonezu Kenshi declining again because that's just his thing.

I wanted Morning Musume OG to appear for their 20th anniversary.

The ship has long sailed and the whole Yoshizawa Hitomi thing = chances even slimmer

Why NHK use Kpop? I thought Kpop is niche in Japan? Are Kpop especially BTS is huge or the trend in overall Japan Youth market? Is there no real Japan Idol group trending between Japan youth market?

With BTS Jimin openly wore Hirosima Bombing T-shirt on few occasion do you think it is still possible?

Yeah, that was never going to happen without that happening. H!P fans for some reason think their groups are more relevant than they really are.

It's niche overall, part of the youth niche. BTS doesn't have a hit song that the public knows. King & Prince is definitely more of a trend.

BTS doesn't have any hits, but they have a rabid young fan base that will tune in for anything they appear on and that's what NHK ultimately wants: a young audience. Twice hasn't had a hit since TT, but they'll be invited for the same reason. Though with this whole T-shirt issue, NHK may decide not to invite either.

I could see possibly MISIA/HIDE making an appearance since their song did really well. DA PUMP will likely get an invite, and Utada could be invited since Anata went Platinum.

Keyakizaka46 is easily the biggest girl group this year, so they'll get an invite. Little Glee Monster, too. E-girls is a toss-up. Pain, Pain is their most popular song in a while (has nearly 1 million streams on Spotify alone and 60k digital downloads) + Perfect World is getting a good response.

I would add back number and Kenshi Yonezu, but I'm not sure either of them would accept an invitation.

Obviously there will be the usual Johnny's invites.

Then why they want to attract this niche youth market and angering bigger youth market by inviting BTS (who deliberately wore Hiroshima bombing t-shirt)?

They also had quite a few mega-hits 2 decades ago. (Including subunits)

King and Prince for sure. Hmmm Shiina, Perfume and Hoshino Gen will be back?  I agree Yonezou won't be there but it sure would be something if he was.  I think Tokio is probably out...

The youth market itself is a niche. It's the other age demographics they would have to worry about in regards to the shirt, not the youth. Kohaku has a generally older audience who is more sensitive to those things.

I don't know anyone that thinks that

There are loads. Fans are always asking why they're excluded from shows. They're not relevant enough!

Yes, 20 years ago.

I think most international fans understand their current standing in the entertainment world, comments on Arama doesn't really count as a lot. Although a lot people hope the collabs with DA PUMP leads to some appearances at some of the end of the year shows.

And relevance is hardly the be all end all to get on the big annual shows, considering some of the acts that get invited.

I could see some Johnny's group getting dropped this year. Not necessarily because of the scandals they had (J&A has enough influence to get them in anyway) but because they'd rather give a spot to King & Prince who I'm pretty confident will be there. If not this time, then definitely next year.

Utada would be invited regardless if she wanted to attend.

I also think MISIA/HIDE will get invited but I doubt HIDE will appear unless he's wearing a mask which would be a bit weird

TOKIO might not appear, so that's a free spot already for King & Prince.

How about Ieiri Leo? Moshi Kimi wo Yurusetara did pretty decent this year.

I think MISIA/HIDE, DA PUMP and Kenshi Yonezu will be invite to Kohaku, which Kenshi will decline but I hope he appears on Kohaku.

I also hope that Mr.Children will go onto Kohaku since they released a new album, but unfortunately I think they will not appear too.

Then I wish they would invite Aimyon.

Do GReeeeN members perform on tv shows now? I doubt HIDE will perform with MISIA.

I don't think King & Prince are a shoo in like most people think, despite the open slot from Tokio. KinKi Kids and KAT-TUN had big debuts too but they didn't appear long afterwards in the former's case and never for the latter. I mean they're probably likely, considering Johnny's have more slots than they did previously, but I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Aside from the regulars, Dreams Come True will probably come back since they're doing the theme song for Manpuku.

preach sis.

Are people still trying to pretend that Morning Musume (and their associated HP subunits) were not arguably the biggest/most successful Asian idol girl group back in their hey-day (apart from maybe SPEED)? imstupid.png

BTS is popular in the Youth Market literally everywhere in the world. They are the biggest boyband.

I'd assume they won't appear on Kouhaku bc they'll prob be invited to Times Square. Maybe they will perform live through satellite though

First, successful veteran artists will be invited, generally. These will be artists whose been in the spotlight constantly for many years.

Second, newcomers who have breakthroughs will be invited.

Third, foreign artists who are very active in Japan could be invited. This is where K-pop artists fall, and they will have to compete with other foreign artists.

BTS isn't that big in Japan, this needs to be emphasised, local J-pop bands have more popularity. Their recent album sold 100,000+ copies in Japan, which would put them in the top 40.
