TWICE Becomes First K-Pop Group To Work With Transgender Composer Kim Petras

Recommended Posts

TWICE has been trailblazing since their debut and have achieved many K-Pop firsts, so it’s not surprising that TWICE may be the first K-Pop group to co-write with an openly transgender composer.

Nothing to do with Twice but .... why is it that it became more special for the fact that the song writer is a transgender ?

Please don't get me wrong i support the LGBTQ movement and i also think that they need to be more represented in media.

But i noticed a pattern that everytime it says someone is gay , lesbian or transgender whatever he/she does is seen as something special.

Like the Singer Holland, he only became a known name for the fact that he is gay and he is using his sexuality to promote himself. I do think that these people should bring awareness to this Topic, but their sexuality shouldn't be used as a promo to make them seem special.

Wasn't the intention  of the LGBTQ movement to show that it doesn't matter who you love and that your sexuality shouldn't get people to discriminate you .... that you should be valued by the person you are and not by your gender and sexuality ?

So i see it quite problematic when people love and support someone just because of their sexuality. Of course it's better then to discriminate someone for that, but it's still not the goal he LGBTQ movement actually wanted to achieve.

Nevertheless she looks really pretty and i think it ain't fair to label her as a 'transgender' song writer , she is a song writer no need to mention she is transgender

I don't understand the relation between being a writter and being trasgender is it really the need to label her as a trasgender writter why can't she just be a writter

Hi! Long answer but I'll try and answer your question as best I can. As someone long involved in the LGBT rights movement of my city, I can tell you that it sadly isn't as black and white as that. When I was a gay kid, representation of any kind was what I wanted. There were barely any shows or movies with gay content, and barely any openly out artists/celebs in the 90's when I was growing up. So I latched onto any kind of LGBT related content I could. Now, thankfully we've progressed so much on LGBT rights in the US that we're starting to reach a point where guys like Troye Sivan and Sam Smith are simply musicians.

Holland is known for being gay. Is that his end game in terms of what kind of career he wants to have? Of course I'm sure he and any artist that identifies as LGBT would eventually want to be judged on the terms of their artistry, not sexuality, but we need to put into perspective Korea's current stance of LGBT rights. They have none. Zero protections against discrimination or worse. If a current idol came out right now, I'm damn sure that their career would all but be destroyed.

I'm going to be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Holland's music but I still paid money to help crowd fund his upcoming album solely because of the balls and courage he has to speak out on gay issues in a country that is so behind LGBT rights. He had a video on his channel where he was opening and unboxing gifts that were given to him, and I remember he read out several letters from LGBT fans in Korea and how proud they were of him. That he's an inspiration to them for being out and open. To me, that's all reason enough for his career to exist.

If we lived in a society where LGBT rights were a given, then I'd absolutely agree with the concept that sexuality should not matter. But considering that being openly gay in dozens of not hundreds of countries would end one's career or (in case of many African and Middle Eastern countries) even garner the death penalty, we still have ways to go. And guys like Holland and MRSHLL, whose importance lies in their willingness to speak out and be a voice for LGBT people in Korea, sometimes being that "gay" singer is necessary. And with regards to transgender rights, which is still in its infancy, the fact that TWICE is doing this is amazing.
