What do you guys think of time?

Hello guys!

So what do you guys think of concept of time? do you think it actually exists?

From my perspective and in my reality the concept of time as we know it nowadays doesnt really exist (for me at least) and that it only starts to exist for me when I give meaning to it or if it becomes relative (in cases where i have to go somewhere). I mean we all exist at same time anyways (any parts of the universe) even though we are a few years away (but that is only if that year/time becomes relative to something) otherwise I think and am sure in my reality and perspective we all exist at same time.

Little i think true fact:

one of the reasons as to why a clock/watch/time was invented to what we know of it now was due to trains as to avoid accidents that have been occurring before the concept of watches was invented.

I agree with you. Time is intangible and relative. Without a clock to measure time, how 'short' or how 'long' a period of time is dependent on each individual. A clock is merely a tool for us to standardize the way we measure time.

this is not good haha you're entering murky waters

if you're going to question the very concept of time, you're at the same time questioning human existence as well, because the very concept of time allows humans being able to exist, in re creationism (or evolution, whatever you subscribe to)

practically, though, time is unit of measurement, and it is a name given to measure progression independently of whatever is happening

I don't think we would age if time didn't exist, but time as a concept can have many meanings.

We age because of the oxygen that we take in.

Oxygen while essential for living, is also one of the things that will eventually bring us closer to death.

We tend to think of time as linear, but some say its actually circular, that events repeat themselves. That used to always puzzle me when I was younger, but I think I understand it a bit; there are neverending cycles that occur, from the rotation of the planet, to the water cycle, to the life and death cycle of every creature. One day, this planet that was formed by the fusing of rocks and stardust will eventually return to that state and become the basis of a new planet. I think it's a very humbling way to think of the concept.

(Now I want to look up more info on this...)

This and other comments make me think about life in ways I don't really want to. xD

I do think time exists - it just has many forms and interpretations and is relative. It doesn't have to be measured in order to witness something or someone's change of state.

Time obviously exists - entropy (the movement of everything naturally shifting from order to chaos) shows this quite clearly. But the kicker is that time is relative, there is no absolute value of time that universally everyone can agree on.

Time is joined with space to become spacetime and just as space can expand or contract, so can time. Einsteins Theory of General Relativity says slows down near massive sources of gravity like stars, planets and black holes, a person on the surface of earth will experience time at a slower rate than a person at the top of Everest, but that difference is a billionths of a second.

Einsteins Theory of Special Relativity says time slows down when travelling at extreme speeds that are fractions off lights speed and actually stops at lightspeed itself. But the important thing about this is that EVERYONE experiences lightspeed the same no matter how slow or how fast they are travelling which can lead to strange scenarios like 2 events can both have happened at the same time or happened one after another, both can be valid. Also, travelling at or close to lightspeed essentially means you're time travelling, going into the future at a much slower rate than a person not moving or someone not travelling ta lightspeed.

So basically, time is different for everyone, our measuring and personal understanding of time (1 sec is 1 sec long) would almost be completely different to a person living elsewhere in the universe or even just floating around in space, even living at different altitudes on earth have very minute differences in time. And dont forget, the way we actually measure time (using the sun and our rotating planet then cutting it up into smaller pieces like hours, minutes etc) would be utterly meaningless to practically everyone else in the universe.

i dont think we age because of time though (at least not in the sense of time as we know it, i dont know how to explain this well its kind of hard  ), its because our bodies become weak and we age (cause yet again age is just a number and it only starts to mean something if you give meaning to it) but i agree with the second part the concept of time can interpreted differently by different people
