BTS were not pushing either, yet they were still able to "gain traction". And due to this BTS gain media attention and were invited to different Western activities. They had international appeal and helped open K-Pop to an international sphere. Who knows what it would be like if they were active in the current climate? BTS certainly gained traction as they're an active group, ahead of Big Bang's time of activity as well. Big Bang even with minimal effort in the west have scored collabs with big western artists like Missy Elliot. I feel like TIME's addition of them as a failure to gain traction is misinformed to say the least. Big Bang were the "western validators" of their day. It's why they were nominated and won the EMAs.
