Virginia middle school left transgender student alone and out in the open during active shooter drill

A Virginia middle school is facing criticism after allegedly barring a transgender student from seeking shelter during an active shooter drill.

Equality Stafford, an LGBT rights group in Stafford, Va., wrote in a Facebook post that instructors at Stafford County Middle School forced the student to sit alone in the gym because they could not decide which bathroom or locker room to send her.

Washington, D.C., LGBTQ publication Metro Weekly reported on the incident, which took place last week.

The other students in her class, following protocol, sheltered in the nearest bathroom or locker room to simulate where they would shelter if an active shooter attacked the school.

"The student was forced to watch the adults charged with her care, debate the safest place (for the other students) to have her shelter," Equality Stafford claimed. "During this debate, she was instructed to sit in the gym with a teacher until the drill was complete, away from her peers and identified as different."

The student was eventually told to sit in the locker room hallway, away from other students, for the remainder of the drill.

"During an event that prepares children to survive an attack by actual assailants, she was treated as if she was so much of a danger to peers that she was left exposed and vulnerable," Equality Stafford wrote. "These events occur across our country right now but this one happened here."

Sherrie Johnson, a spokesperson for the school, issued a statement on the situation, according to Metro Weekly. In the statement, Johnson said the district does not comment on individual student incidents, according to WUSA.

"The new superintendent has requested a review of all protocols and procedures to ensure that all children are treated with dignity and respect," Johnson said in the statement. "We take such matters very seriously and they will be addressed. The welfare of all students is of the utmost importance for SCPS."

Equality Stafford is calling for concerned parents and community members to attend the district's school board meeting on Tuesday night.

These cunts really told her her life isn't worth saving since she's transgender.

she would go in the girl's bathroom or locker room. how was this even a debate.

honestly why are adults so fucking out of touch? becoming transgender is social fucking suicide (case in point); no one is becoming a trans woman up in here just to molest girls. we all have plenty of evidence you don't need to change your gender to sexually assault women and get away with it, so enough of this farce.

this goes beyond your personal views on transgender people.

like

if there was a shooter going around, and the only places to take refuge was the women's restroom because the men's was locked, would you block boys from entering the women's restroom because it'd would be the wrong one were it a normal day?

this is protecting a life, not taking a piss.

take her in one; debate about whether it was the right choice AFTER.

(and no, i don't care that it was a drill. drills are *supposed* to be treated like the real thing)

Well, as this was happening in the US it's not like the school could have possibly made the "right" decision. Had they sent her to any of the bathrooms/locker rooms they would surely have got sued by angry parents for "endangering" their precious little kids.

if anything they would have made the wrong decision,

but even sending her to the boys' restroom/locker room would have been better than this.

Why would they even go through the extra step to divide them by gender. It's not like they have to go to the shower or change clothes during a shooting, so just get the kids to safety.

If there was an actual shooting and a cis boy ran the wrong way would they really close the door in his face... I somehow doubt that very much.

I agree, but I got the impression they were too worried about making the "wrong" decision that they just ended up doing nothing (and now they are getting bashed for it).

Or maybe they were just a-holes, who knows.
