Yuta suffers of amnesia, doesn't remember anything neither why he woke up on his classmate Rikka's house. However, he start to see strange sightseeings of giants monsters which do not move and, on top of that, through one of Rikka's computer a mysterious figure call him but only he can see any of those. When the city is in danger the mysterious figure drags Yuta into the computer and transform him into the super hero GRIDMAN.

This first episode give me such a nostalgic feel when I used to tune in to see shows like Power Rangers when I was a kid and I'm so f*ck*ng down for it.

The episode give a really interesting world building regarding the show and the characters performance was great....on the first half. Among the cons can't say if the show is trying to be deep or just dragging scenes for the sake of dragging, because there were a lot of "silent scenes", you know panning on something and absolutely nothing happening for a good amount of seconds, and then the main cast interaction felt awkward and a bit rushed by the time the fight came. However, the fight was acceptable enough to entertain me, the rendition of the CG was decent in most of the fight.

The premise of the show can be old-fashion so far but it was entertaining enough to keep me in so I take it.

Boi this anime will definitely make my saturdays if it's keeps this charm.

I still do not know if in last episode they tried to be deep or just lazy to animate, the thing is that issue was resolved, now the plot unfolding went better, the pace as well and the introduction of more side characters along with the main antagonist went smoothly. Moreover, the introduction of supernatural elements in the storytelling went smoothly as well without feeling out of place, the OST got better the fights as well.

Screenshot-20181013-195021.png

However, the characters interactions is still awkward once the fight kicks in and with the new elements added to the plot I do not know if they can reach certain level of complexity it seems they are aiming for with the current structure (monster of the week), I would not be surprised if they can't but I would not mind either since the show is clearly following those 90's live action super-hero series.

So far is delivering, and sometimes exceeding, what was presented.

The show is self aware that is following an old-fashioned formula and I love it. The soundtrack, dialogues, monster of the week,is so old-school. However, trying to be a bit beyond that could play against it if not played properly.

Compared to the previous episodes this time there was a lot more going on, the cast interaction was not awkward anymore during fights, the production quality boosted and the show went more faster.

Screenshot-20181020-223046.png

However, is obvious some more complex elements are trying to be injected to the storytelling but they could be a hit or miss regarding on their treatment and if they were not treates properly it would had been nothing and a waste of time.

So far the show is aiming to it's public and is doing great on that but it must be carefull on how this new elements may play out later on.

A bit more chill than before but still with a lot going on, it tamed itself to go on routes they may not fullfil - due the old school fashion format they are going - and decide it to stay on it's lane...for now.

The interactions between the main cast was not as awkward as before (thank god) and at some points it was refreshing...but that is probably due the injected teenage melodrama of this episode which served as a trigger to explore the characters a bit, they are not complex (as expected, duh) but they have their own charm and mysteries enough to shine on their own. The comedy was on point ("junk" freezing' secuence was soooooo relatable) and the fight catchy, crazy (#battleroyale) and entertaining.

The show sometimes exude an unique aura but then not which can throw off a bit, but if you are among the show's demographics (Power Rangers~like show) then this anime just keep delivering.

Well, someone already know the main 2 highlight of the show for the rest of the public, lol.

That aside, this time it tamed itself to tease of going on another directions and the result was a chill and fun episode. Can´t say the Kaiju of this week was as amusing as the previous one but, as always, was a feast to the eyes.

On a side note, I liked how the Gridman Alliance was drawn in a sense that it felt they are truly teens, Hibiki skinny, Shou with belly fat without going to extreme and even Rikka, despite the craze over her thighs her design did not went overboard (besides her thighs) compared to the...fan...arts. Anyway, maybe is an overthinking but is a small detial that is welcome.

On previous episodes I manifested my concern about the show trying to aim to certain levels of complexity that they may not reach, well this episode answer me that. They reached and nail it by it's standards.

There wasn´t kaiju action but focused on world building an answering questions to the main cast but for us, the viewers, already knew but introduced new mysteries wich probably will be answered by the same way the cast got their answers in this episode. However, the reveal part was really captivating due it´s surrealness secuence (like a mix between Yuu´s early introspections from Bloom Into You mixed with the editing of Maria Holic), all the characters felt they were transported to another dimension when the key point of the episode reached to them and it nailed it´s immersion.

There was some minor action secuence but this episode fully focused on the world building and it went neat for the show standard (some power-ranger saturday-morning show mostly aimed for kids).

Is like the production said fuck it! We introduced all the cast, the waifus, give enough material of waifus so the otakus can fap until new year, the kaijus now let´s get full wierdo until the end of the season and I mother fucking love it.

sgB.png

Things that usually will be dragged for drama sake are beign straighforward revealed not only to the viewvers but for the cast as well, and, for surprise, their reaction to it felt natural and beievable (for now), the plot continues to develop smoothly by the shows standards (late nineties live-action super hero show) along with the "monster of the week formula" all of this blended perfectly...however, did the "silent secuences" came back?

Whatever is the case, the virtues of the show make up for all the flaws it has for now.

And the revelation ain't stopping altho they are not as strong as before and they are more like complements than new information.

However, the interaction between the cast took a new level and at times it felt refreshing, in special the interaction between the Gridman alliance and Akane. I mean, now that all the cards are on the table the script is exploiting the possibilities between them. The introduction of the kaiju of the week felt refreshing as well but the fight itself could had been handled better to make it more memorable but WE FINALLY GOT A FULLY ASSEMBLED GRIDMAN!

gridmanC.png

But more important, at the end, Rikka is best boi and Hibiki is best girl.

On a side note, I loved the direction of this episode before the fight.

The best episode so far and probably the best episode of this week from the shows I'm watching this season. The script is fully playing with all the elements they are on the table and is succeding with every direction they are taking after episode 6. Like on this episode they went full Serial Experiment Lain both on storytelling and production (but with more budget and less complexity) and it blended perfectly.

And on an extra note, finally the Neon Genesis High School students assembled their own robot!

At first, it felt the show may not be able to kept the hype from that masterpíece of episode 9...oh boy how wrong I was.

gridmanA.png

Yeah, the first minutes felt a bit flat and sometimes did not know where to go but once they visited Akane's house all the hype came back and it deliver every aspect the script aimed to reach (comedy, drama, mistery, fights, plot-twists) and more. The fight with the vagina-like kaiju was definetely the best to date among the series and THAT CLIFFHANGER THO.

gridmanC.png

And ofcourse, Anti siding with Gridman was expected since the moment he appeared but that does not stop the awesomeness that his transformation imto gridknight.

And so, the ultimate question was answered---and WTF? It was so random but somehow made sense, for real it made sense but opens another question wich I hope is answered on the last episdoe.

Besides that, this episode was alright. At first glance it seems Utsumi's behaviour at the beginning was a bit forced but later I realized he is the most non-anime character of this season due how he reacted to the events in this episode as it's progresed. Then the fight came, it managed to top last week fight with all the kaijus facing Gridman and Gridknight with non-stop action.

An the the cliffhanger, next week final fight will be...interesting.

The madmen at TRIGGER did it! LMAO

Overall it ended as expected, the classic "the power of friendship" saves the day trope and stuff so there is no much to talk about since if one thing the reactions left clear is this is a direct sequel from the original nineties live action series so there is truly not much I can say since I have not seen the original show, altho I believe for the show standards it did alright in filling the anime's plot had set during it's running. Anyway, I really loved the direction on the fight, a mix between the usual fights of before with the surrealness of episode 9 wich made and unique experience and, of course, those final minutes.

Finally, definetely among the biggest surprises of the season, even of the year, a prime example of how with good direction and right amount of twist can turn a simple/"childish" premise into a masterpise, even delivering one of the most amazing episodes of the year (episode 9). Because, let´s face it, if it was bad directed (coughcoughDerridacoughcough) or played too safe (coughcoughReleaseTheSpycecoughcough) the obvious blandness of it's key elements - Bland MC and bland antagonist - would had been exposed and overshadowed the not so bland elements like Akane and the whole God thing.

Still has the barries of having a Power-Ranger-Kid-Show like premise, but if you do not care about it is a recommend watch.

Sin-t-tulo-1.gif

On a side note, I really want a Gridknight action figure.
