question for those who took AP courses in high school

was there an AP class where you decided to stay in the class but NOT take the AP exam at the end of the year?

I'm lowkey thinking of doing that with my AP lang class this year.... I'm doing really well but the teacher basically teaches the class like it's a standard class (which I'm not complaining it makes things a lot easier) but because of that I'm pretty sure I won't be ready for the AP test at all. A lot of the students in the class already decided they weren't gonna take the test but idk yet I wanna wait and see how I feel when it gets closer to the test date since we have like 7 months left.

but my question is: Is taking the test and getting like a 3 or lower on it better than not take it at all? and do colleges even care or will it look bad if I don't take it?

unless you care about filling out the college requirement, it doesn't really matter.

I once took an AP class and our teacher didn't prep us at all for the AP exam, and I took the exam anyway and I think got a 2. my college didn't care.

i took the AP language and composition test as it was with almost no additional studying and got a 5...that being said, my teacher did a good job of making us practice the three types of essays on a time crunch in-class.  definitely prepared me and helped me pump out those essay responses during the exam

you still get valuable information out of the class even if you don't take the AP exam.  don't sweat it. smile.png if you don't feel like you'd be prepared enough, trust your gut

omg really! I always thought they cared about what score you got which is why I'm hesitant about taking this test. Filling out the requirement would be ideal though and I want to try but I was afraid bombing the test would hurt me.

and thank you I'll just wait and see how the rest of the year goes for now.

i doubt colleges will care but, i would recommend you take the test.

like. you have nothing to lose? unless you have to pay for it

at my school the exams were free to ap kids but i dunno if it's that's the case for u

I don't have to pay! I was honestly only worried because I thought failing would look bad but if colleges don't care then i guess it's worth a shot

Most unis I looked at don't even accept credits for any AP/IB exam in english you still have to take the writing courses anyways so it doesn't matter if you don't take the exam it's great exposure nonetheless

At my school we had to take the test. If you didn't take the test you grade will be lowered to the next grade level. Like if your final grade was an 'A' it change to a 'B'.

Imo, I would suggest you take it if you sorta know if you can pass. Maybe things have changed but when I graduated in 2013, I passed some AP tests with 4/5s and it transferred as credits to my UC school. Passing AP Lan/Lit helped me bypass undergrad writing and went straight to upper divs with my academic counselors permission.

I failed my AP bio test with a 2 and that did nothing for me, so don't take it if you feel unprepared. Also, subject tests did nothing for me as well. Overall though, taking AP classes already helps you look like a good student, don't feel too pressured and good luck!!

dont think it really matters for colleges

I took an AP class and did well in the class but decided not to do the AP test because I knew I would do horrible on it and I didn't want to waste my money to pay for the test

omg reallyrlytearpls.png rlytearpls.png rlytearpls.png  The english and history ones are the main ones I wanted to get out of the way for college

I've heard of schools that do that but what my school does is that if you take the AP exam you're exempt from taking the classes final exam (it's your choice you can still take the final if you want to raise your grade or something) and if you decide to NOT take the AP exam you're required to take the final exam and if you don't  you get a 0 on it

yeah after reading the replies in here and looking some stuff up on my own I'm not as worried anymore. I was just afraid that doing bad/ not taking it at all would negatively impact me.

thank you so much!! although this class isn't doing much for me I do have to admit I learned a lot from the other AP classes I've taken so far.

good luck!!

thank you <3

it's actually free at my school so wasting money isn't what I'm worried about but now that I know colleges don't care like that I'm calm! thank you I'll just see how the rest of the year goes

I took all the exams for my APs last year

and I’ll be doing the same this year

also if at my school you don’t sit for the AP exam, the AP designation gets taken off of your transcript

Like if I skipped the AP English Literature exam, it would show up as Honors English Literature on my transcript

and AP is harder than honors

and if I didn’t plan to take the exam, why would I do all the work in an AP class - taking the honors class would be displayed identically on my transcript, I’d have less complicated work to do, and I’d probably be getting higher grades

Maybe take a look at your school’s requirements

Also as other users have said, if you do well on the exam you can bypass some college courses (depends on the subject and on the school) and save a ton of money and maybe graduate early from college

I took AP Human Geography... which doesn’t really feel like an AP class. I think you should take it tho, especially if it’s free. If your teacher isn’t a good one, the school usually offers before/after school AP classes. Having the AP thing on your transcript makes it look nicer too. Maybe this just depends on the college, but you do get college credits for competing AP classes.

The AP Lang test is definitely one of the easier tests, if you practice. Not even "studying." Just practice answering multiple choice, reading and analyzing texts quickly, and writing fast. I recommend you look at the past tests online and practice writing the essays within the 45 min time limit. That's the hardest part of the test is can you present a coherent argument fast enough?

I took AP Macro Economics but didn't take the test because I thought I wouldn't be doing econ in college. LOL. I was so wrong and had to endure relearning an entire semester of basic ass macro in a giant lecture hall and drop an additional $100 on the textbook so yeah. Don't be like me.

Just take it? Study and prepare as much as you can. It's not gonna hurt you (other than the fee which you can get a waiver for) and if you do end up getting a 3 then some universities you apply to might end up taking it. ( I know the state universities in my state do) Don't worry too much.

Check with the school you want to go to to make sure. They might accept them, all schools are different.
