Is your country colorist

Holy Cow

I'm an indian and boy are we colorist as eff. It's kind of ingrained in our psyche. My family is on the lighter tone compared to many indians and i'm a little dark. my relatives tell me to use skin bleaches to lighten up or i'll end up having a darker partner and i'm like "so? why is that a bad thing". They equate being beautiful to being fair and i'm like "bih, beauty doesn't have a color". one other thing that riles me up is the adverts promoting skin bleaching products. like legit big celebrities endorse those products. so, how's it like in your country.

It's not exactly that being beautiful equal to being fair it's that since centuries that the people who have a darker side tone are related to being poor because the people who work out on the sun get a darker skin while the nobles (rich people) didn't need to work outisde so they got lighter skins

hmmm i don't think my country is colorist since most white people here are always wishing for tans. they're definitely racist towards black people though. literally saw little 6th graders calling their classmate "dirty" for being black and messing with him all the time. anytime someone in my class even sees a black person in a video they go "eeyyyy" and start making fun of him

what you said is true and are you an indian?. where i'm from, people generally equate being fair to beautiful. hell even my mom says me to get myself a fair bride(she's gonna be so dissapointed when she knows that i'm gay). i'm a telugu and we are a very colourist society

No not the country

And colorism like wtf isnt that it’s just lowkey racism like... whiter = better dark, skin = bad sounds racist to me imstupid.png

well i said colorist because i belive we are indians as a race(idk) and people discriminate based on skin colour. and don't worry we are racist too, sometimes towards our own countrymen

Not colorist but yes racist with people of others latin countries like Peru, Bolivia or Paraguay.

People of Buenos Aires city says despective nationalities

Peru= peruca

Paraguay= paragua

Bolivia= bolita

HORRIBLE

Bolita lmao that must be new. Where are you from?, you know, latin people, we like to pick on each other just for fun

On topic: Some are colorists in my country but I'd say they're a minority. A lot of people still has some prejudice against some countries but that's it

I'm from India as well and I agree with everything you said.

We saw an African boy at our university and the whole class of mine starts laughing like they saw an alien. I felt so bad for him, i told my friends how wrong it is to laugh at someone and thankfully they agreed even though they were laughing at first too

Its not as obvious as in other places, because the large majority here is a bit mixed regardless of their race, its difficult to see someone 100% white, black or asian, unless you go to restrict places like german villages, japanese communities or a place that received a huge amount of african slaves. You can see traces of mixed races in most people's faces here. But colourism cases still happens. And some people say pretty racist shit. Its nothing like the segregation in US tho, because racism isnt a sensible topic here as it is there. But, I think there's still a privilege that happens here that is due colourism. Like, this recent brazilian soap opera which setting was in one of the places with largest amount of black people (Bahia): almost the ENTIRE cast was white, and none of the important characters was black. And we always had only one black actress to play the protagonist in soap operas so far, for decades, though I only remember two where she was the main character. In short is not that bad but we still can improve a lot until colourism isnt something.

Yeah, Argentina. Negro (as black, not the other meaning) is used as an insult here sometimes. Depends on how ignorant you are though, none of my friend's/family are colorist.

At least in the area I live, the majority is white since almost everyone comes from italian and spanish inmigrants. To give an example, since kindergarden I've had 3 three black classmates so far.

I'm not sure. However, based on my own experiences most people here are obsessed with tanning (including people of European descent, also probably somewhat due to the climate here) and being super pale could be seen negatively. (although most of the people I grew up with had medium to dark skin tones - Polynesian and Indigenous, some caucasian though).

Although we are having an issue with members of the media singling out the Somali population (although technically not colorism, but prejudice and racism). btw I'm from Australia

I've also seen prejudice towards light-skinned people from the Indigenous community (that I am a part of) along the lines of 'you pass for white and therefore do not have the same experiences of racial discrimination' (among other things) when that is certainly not true
