Live performances: what are your pet peeves?

  • bad lip syncing

while i have no problem with the practice of lip sync itself it annoys me to no end when performers' mouths don't match the audio. happens in live performances, happens in MVs too. and just why. why would you voluntarily distract your audience from your own performance like that. just shoving it in their faces so each and everyone can focus on the fact that you don't actually sing it

  • "all but one" in choreographed group performances

when one or couple dancers skip parts, miss beats or just not as "into it" as others. sticks out like a sore thumb. like sure, freestyle it or just stand here being all "charismatic" for solo parts/dances. but out of sync dancing is just so unsatisfactory

Rather then the artist themselves, my pet peeves have to do with venues. e.g. Bad sound system.

1. I feel some artist do that on purpose to sort of show their "bad at lip syncing"

2. It depends tbh.

Some artist are naturally really good at free-styling without looking bad and staying on rhythm. When seeing an artist live one don't necessarily pay attention to the accuracy of the choreo. It's sort of hard to do with everything going on lol. Plus the big screen tend to focus on close ups of members at a time. It's the artist job to keep the audience hype. They have to be flexible. Using the entire stage to engage and emote. Being strict and following the choreo 100% is not necessary during live concerts.

Besides I prefer artist to be passionate and having fun on stage with fans rather then bored and robotic.

1. if it's a way to rebel when they are forced to lip sync - yeah, makes sense. if it's an "artistic choice" - seems to be rather unfortunate one to me.

nothing is "necessary" during live concerts, they can do whatever. but i'm one of those who does pay attention to choreo lol, they are dance groups after all. following the choreo doesn't in any shape or form hinder the delivering on emotional or hype specter. it's just them expressing the song as one unit as opposed to solo interpretation. and parts that are meant to be in sync better be in sync otherwise the whole group looks a mess. in their set-lists they usually have plenty of partly and entirely choreo-free songs meant for going around the stage(or riding various thingies if the venue is too big) in order to interact with, engage and hype the audience in unique for each concert way.

though in the end i'll agree with you. passionate and fun is preferable to dispassionate but technically perfect dance performance for me too.

While I do love a good choreo, personally I don't consider most kpop groups a 'dance group'. They are made to dance because it's simply entertaining. However there are a few members in each group who truly are passionate about dancing. Sometimes these members will feel the music and feed off the crowd, so freestyle is common for them too. They don't limit themselves.

Yes, in order to remain passionate, the group has to do what's best for them.

well i'm not anti-freestyle or anti-fun just because i think that choreo doesn't "limit" anyone. you won't say that lyrics are "limiting" to the expression of the song, will you? from my observation the designated "dancers" of the group aka those who are passionate about dancing have no qualms about following group choreos and are at the forefront consistently delivering the top-notch performance for those big screens you mentioned while the rest, who are also trained dancers whichever way you look at it, are often lagging behind.

to draw a vocal analogy: there is a limit to how much off-pitch singing and butchered harmonies my ears can detect before i decide that the group as a whole doesn't sound good in this particular live performance. nowhere was i saying that competent ad-libs are ruining it for me smile.png
