The most obvious is how the members shine with their own names

I remember Yoona who have high ratings dramas, Each members of GG have solo cf, varshow projects etc under their names

Bigbang : GD, Taeyang, Seungri as solo, Top with his drama, Daesung with trot and Varshow star.

Suju : Leeteuk, eunhyuk as mcs, siwon, yesung and kyuhun as solo, etc

Kara : Hara was IT, nicole varshow icon

and many others

The title of Nations bg/gg wasn't used as much, but general public know KNOW their names because of their solo gigs.

They get it in their 1st or 2nd years of their careers too

why do you think its different now? i feel like popular groups are shipped off to japan the moment they debut nowadays

do you think the popularity between 2nd and 3rd groups in sk is even comparable???

I think it's not the popularity difference, it's just that it seems like they're less popular because there's just so /many/ groups out these days that there's a lot of competition. And at the same time it's amazing groups like EXO or BTS retain their status or even get bigger with all the newly debuted idols...

I think second gen groups are more known when it comes to all ages of koreans even many of the individual members have their own name and are known outside from their group

its also true that theres a lot more debuting nowadays compared to back then so its hard to remember them

I think the difference is technology and accessibility.  When 2nd gen was starting Youtube, Twitter, IG and all the other social media and content was just starting or nonexistent.  It's hard to compare really because no one really cared about youtube until Gangnam style and obviously 3rd gen has access to a much much  larger potential viewer/fan base because of social media.  I think really in Korea it's about the same but every where else 3rd gen is def more popular... and will hopefully continue to get more popular.

There are more groups then there were back then. Many more second tier groups now.

yes, but i'm talking about the popular groups here, the ones who have 'made it' as a group

But there were lots of groups neck then too. Remember when during 2011-2012 there was like over 100 groups debuting and vast majority barely made it past 1 or 2 years.

I think back then idols were more popular as a whole. Not only did they have music but they were constantly in the public's eye. Groups like Suju, 2pm and especially SNSD were always on TV in some form regardless if they were promoting or not. That helped spread the group and individual members names which they carried on building on. TV exposure, companies jumping to have them endorse stuff, hallyu spread etc meant idols were the 'in' thing at the time

TVXQ and Big bang proving you don't need to appear more on TV if you already popular, they are more busy doing tour and it is bring more money than all of the TV regular revenue combined, company learn from that and that is why BTS no longer bother to promote on music show or TV, they comeback with 1 week or less promotion then busy doing tour. JYP is doing the same with Twice, 3 comeback with 1 or 2 week promotion then busy with groups schedule with concert tour, etc, doing TV show is not much needed when you already made it and have big fandom that will buy your album, merch or going to your concert tour..
