Oh no! I hope those who are injured recover quickly! And for those who have passed, may they rest in peace.

It seems that 2014 is just not South Korea‘s year. The first half of the year has been nothing but mishaps and disasters, causing deaths, injuries, and the people of South Korea to mourn and worry left and right. Things don’t get any better as another tragic incident occurred at a rural South Korean hospital, killing 21 people.

On early Wednesday in Jangseong, South Jeolla Province a fire broke out in a hospital for elderly people, injuring 7 and killing 21. The dead included one nurse who was working the night shift, and 6 injured are currently in critical condition according to authorities. The cause of the fire still has yet to be determined, but according to witnesses, the fire started in an unoccupied room on the second floor of the building.

35 people were reported to be on the second floor when the fire broke out at about 12:27 AM, and 7 of those people managed to escape. Fire services arrived at the scene within 4 minutes and were able to put out the fire by 12:55 AM.

Sadly, most of those who died were prevented from evacuating due to old age and medical conditions. Most of the victims were in their 70s and 80s, suffering from senile dementia or the side effects of stroke.

Along with investigating the fire, authorities are also investigating whether the hospital was in practice of placing patients in restraints following witness accounts.

This is definitely not Korea’s best year. Hopefully things will get better because I’m sure the people don’t want to have any more to mourn over.

There's been states in the US passing laws that state those not on the ground-floor of a retirement home/eldery care facility must be physically capable of going down the stairs in case of an evacuation.

A lot of facilities in the US do not follow this practice and if there's a fire and you have many eldery people in wheel chairs or who can't move it would lead to a lot of deaths... but since you tend to have more physically unfit patients the homes try to be at maximum occupency so they shove them in wherever.
