enchante 4,542
When you look at the big picture, though the industry would like you to believe otherwise, the casual sexism and patriarchal nature of South Korea is ever present in Kpop. It's the little things that are seen as normal in the culture; female idols always having to chose who's the most attractive out of male hosts or saying who they would date. Or take for example the open discussion of their bodies whether it's the waist measuring on Weekly Idol, or Gugudan's Kang Mina being presented with pictures of her body pre-diet for ridicule. And despite what you might believe boy groups permeate these beliefs too. Whether in the way they don't take girl group covers seriously, or speak down to female idols. How many times have you seen clips where a girl group member looked visibly uncomfortable with a touch, or a question asked? International fans are even worse than kfans in that they claim to hold to feminist beliefs but belittle female idols just to raise up their male faves. These women are just expected to lie back and take the criticisms, the comments, the objectification. Even when something controversial happens the community outrages for one day, even then still blaming the female idol, and then they forget about it until the next one. It's an endless cycle of misogyny.
LoveInUs 452
It’s really sad and frustrating how female idols are treated and seen in Kpop.

Kami the II. 1,723
I'd rather consider the points you made as insensitivity than sexism tbh... But yes, these are facts upsetting facts....
enchante 4,542
Yep, these are facts. But I'd rather consider the points you made as insensitivity than sexism tbh... Nah it’s definitely targeted sexism. The things you see happening to female idols in my opinion happen pretty rarely to male idols. It’s a side effect of the patriarchal culture in South Korea. The thing is, I don't want to admit sexism cuz being into such an industry hurts my pride as a female... I know it's stupid...

I concur with everything except this. If anything ifans put down boygroups more and fangirls in the name of feminism... when fangirls themselves are also women. Not horny, irrational women that should be shamed for their sexuality.
karnasungod 39
Sexism is happening all over the world nothing new move on and the girls knew that they have to face these kind of shit in this line of work and still they joined the industry to fulfill their dream and anyway they are living a life many only dreams about and earning bucks so this kinds of thing is just equivalent exchange, to get something you have to lose something. Reality doesn't run of ideals.
Honeystan 10,291
Even just looking at the roles women are written into for shows and movies it’s quite obvious. Also the ratio of female to male hosts and if there are more female hosts, it’s a beauty show. Women are rarely given more difficult choreo even though you can see in their boy group covers that they are more than capable, but the society seems to really just want to see cheerleader styled girls no matter how much they protest they’ve seen too many similar concepts. I was recently watching UNIT and the girl with short hair was immediately called girl crush, expected to be tougher with a deeper voice etc, just because of her hair length and her sweet personality was a shock O.o like... learn to understand people from more than just their appearance. The divide between women and men in Korea very much still remind me of the 40’s or even earlier. There is still the expectation of stopping a dream at a certain age and becoming a homemaker. Sexy women still have to have a cuteness to them or their seen badly. They have to be perky and energetic and...:vomit emoji: There is like a set rubric for how they want people to be.
