She is too old to be making songs like this...

I really liked the ballad she released last year, but otherwise she still releases the same boring and generic stuff since 2015 or so...

Stupid question, but how much control does she have over the concept of her songs? I find it hard to believe how a singer who released "I", "If", "Distance", "Sakura I Love You", "Aitakutte, Aitakutte" etc. would enjoy songs like the ones she releases nowadays more, especially at her age.

What did Kana do to deserve this kind of dragging?

Besides, wasn't majority of her fanbase teenage girls? I would assume that they'd eat this kind of shit up. But as far as her album sales go, she's still selling 6 figures which is great considering it's her 10th year anniversary. She'll never reach the same success as her peak even with an image change.

Good question.

She's been releasing dull material for years, which is partially why her numbers have fallen. She's not maturing with the fanbase that made her famous. She was always accused of copying Ayu, so I guess this is just another example.

The majority of her fanbase was teenage girls back in like 2011-2012. And now that fanbase is growing up, but she's not changing her image to grow up with them.

I don't think she has much control, her character makes her a lot more compliant that someone like Utada or Namie. She also has often stated in recent years that happy songs is what she wants to release for now.

I agree, but I also think she has modernized her fanbase in some way. Her last song did well on Line Music which is mostly used by teenagers. And if I remember correctly (?), in the recent Nikkei survey, it was mentionned that she was the second or third most popular singer among the teens.

However, as a long-time fan, I can understand that her regression is upsetting. "We Don't Stop" was clearly the last time she pulled off something different and exciting. I also don't understand why Sony doesn't want to follow what's trending right now, she could clearly sing something like Yonezu Kenshi's Lemon. For someone who is marketed as a trendy It Girl, she has been releasing the same style over and over for the past three years... Even her fashion sense is stuck in 2015.

I still like "Bedtime Story" though rolleyes.gif

I don't recall it going well on LINE MUSIC. But she's going to need more than do well on LINE MUSIC since things that are big over there only aren't really seen as hits since they industry doesn't really regard streaming.

And it works. This isnt kpop where you switch from a rock pop concept to a generic sex sells pop concept or the disney actress turned singer who goes from wholesome songs to not so innocent songs

Jpop is the definition of maintaining musical constistency in the face of floundering sales and a mercurial fandom

plenty of artists change their sound over time though

I don't know where you've been if you think artists like Utada Hikaru and and Amuro Namie have stuck with the same sound for the past 20 years

ONE OK ROCK changed their sound to be more mainstream friendly, to the disdain of a lot of their former fans, but they've been highly successful with it

FLOW is a band that started out being fun/goofy/silly, but started maturing their sound as they got older

Perfume used to be very idol-ish and electropop, but as they've gotten older, they've matured their image and their music's transitioned to being more EDM

Morning Musume changes their sound like every 5 years or so

----------------------------

It's not as fast and as drastic as it is in kpop, but it doesn't mean it doesn't happen

All the Shiina Ringo fans who complain that she makes only jazzy lounge music now instead of punk...
