Full name Ami Onuki, she married Teru, the vocalist of the rock band Glay, and announced the birth of their baby girl on her blog in March 2003. Rumors of a divorce have persisted on the internet, particularly in the West. These rumors have mostly been ignored by the Japanese media and have never been confirmed by Ami or Teru. On PUFFY's 2007 greatest hits album Hit & Fun, Ami is pictured both on the CD cover and within the CD insert clearly wearing both an engagement and wedding ring on her left ring finger, and she continues to wear her wedding ring in pictures on the PUFFY Staff Diary.

Watching Teen Titans GO has made me want to listen to them again

I knew them from shorty before the original cartoon and although their own show wasn't that popular I liked it.  It's just fun slapstick with good songs in between.

My fave songs probably have to be Planet Tokyo, Your Love is a Drug and Urei.  I honestly haven't listened to their stuff for the last couple of years though but I am starting again.

any history on how they were made their own cartoon??

are they really popular on japan???

The show was created by Sam Register, who also serves as the series' executive producer.

According to Register, the target audience of the show is boys and girls from six to eleven years old. However, the show also has a following of fans of the real-life Ami Onuki and Yumi Yoshimura who make up the Japanese pop duo PUFFY, known as "Puffy AmiYumi" in North America. Register, a fan of the band, wished to spread its fame to other parts of the world and thus produced the cartoon.

Cute lil interview with PUFFY and Narduwuar

Woo~ They used to be. There was a period called "PUFFY MANIA" which was similar to the the Spice Girls Craze, they were everywhere and on everything. Dolls, video-games, clothes, costumes, cups and plates, candy, multiple variety shows, a cartoon show, had floats during the MACY parades, became goodwill ambassadors.... I mean, shit. They were like the "it" factor, not only in Japan but globally as well.

Everyone can talk about how PSY, Girls' Generation, Hikaru Utada, BoA and whoever else is the one that would/will make it big in the States, but PUFFY is the only act to have not only introduced their country's genre to the world but to be so damn successful at it. PUFFY sold millions (in their ENTIRE career), toured around the world (they jut performed in Cali and Texas in 2017)... And they can't even speak English. AmiYumi was a very successful group. Most people can barely sell a single  but PUFFY dropped 6 damn albums in the USA.

But around 06', the momentum died (They completely left the US market) and PUFFY seemed to have disappeared though I think it' because the girls started to focus on their personal lives. Ami and Yumi are both married women (Well Yumi is twice divorced now...) with Yumi having a son (2012) and Ami with a daughter (2003).

A few theme songs here, a few appearances there. Their last album was 2011 and charted #25, which I think is pretty good (especially since they debuted in 96'). According to their website they dropped a single both this year and last but most Japanese videos and songs are blocked in the USA so I haven't heard them. Their still active and about and still do well though.

The full PV for "SWEET DROPS", which is also the theme song for both the movie and anime version of "Usagi Drops".

This unique PV centralizes on a story of a girl who goes on a date with unique elements at play, such as encountering a construction worker with nunchucks, a large hair dryer, and a heroic robot.

*I can't find how much the albums sold, but I do have the chart ranking

PUFFY

1. #10

2. N/A

3. #20

4. #19

5. #27

6. #17

*I can't find the ranking, but I do have the album sales

Utada

1. Japanese sales: 700,000+ (Not sure how much it sold in the USA)

2. Japanese sales: 1,000,000+ (Total US sales: 55,000)

3. Debuted at #178, Japanese sales: 240,000+ (Total US sales: 33,000) Said to have made 300,000 in total (worldwide).

BoA

1. Charted #127 and sold 8,000 copies. Reached #1 in Korea though on Hanteo charts.

Now Utada has surpassed thousands of artists on an overall scale, with over 38 million albums sold (BoA has 10 million and PUFFY with 14 million). But speaking of USA only, PUFFY is the only one to have done so, successfully. Most of Utada's "American Success" is due to her strong and loyal fanbase in Japan, people like to say all her albums were certified Platinum and Million but that's only in Japan - Which imo, defeats the purpose of even entering a different market (still a fan of her though). And BoA... As much as I love her, she flopped. Hard.

As for themes, they haven't done as many

  • Recorded the opening theme (Hataraku Otoko, Unicorn cover) for anime Hataraki Man (2006).
  • Recorded the opening theme (Oh Edo Nagareboshi IV) for anime Oh! Edo Rocket (2007).
  • Recorded the opening theme (Hiyori Hime) for anime Genji Monogatari Sennenki (2009).
  • Recorded the theme (Wedding Bell, Sugar cover) for Japanese drama Konkatsu! (2009).
  • Recorded the theme (Dareka ga) for movie Naruto ShippÅ«den 3: Inheritors of the Will of Fire (2009).
  • Recorded the theme (Sweep Drops) for movie Usagi Drop (2011)

I don't wanna throw shade, but PSY got lucky with GS. Before that, his highest charted album was his debut album that sold over 100,000 but didn't reach 200,000. Even his last Korean album (EP) didn't make it to 200,000. On a worldwide revenue, GS has made 7.9 million (meaning that technically, he is the most successful Asian act in the USA), totally all his album and song sales, leaves him somewhere in the 8 million (still below the aforementioned women though...)
