The Man Who Became King confirms main pairing Yeo Jin-goo, Lee Se-young

yjg_lsy1.jpg&key=be5b656a844e115b6a73978

The drama remake of multi-million dollar grossing film Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King (also known as Masquerade) has confirmed Yeo Jin-goo (Reunited Worlds) in the titular role, with Lee Se-young (Hwayugi) as his queen. After wavering between drama title names (Gwanghae, The Queen’s Man), it looks like they’ve settled on The Man Who Became King.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet (you should go see it, I highly recommend it), it’s essentially an eloquent prince-and-pauper story set in Joseon. In the drama, Yeo Jin-goo will play the dual roles of King Yi Heon (later known as Gwanghae) and peasant clown Ha-sun. After having lived his life constantly paranoid and on guard against palace intrigue and assassinations, Yi Heon will trade places with Ha-sun who looks exactly like him when a poisoning attempt goes too far (which varies from the plot of the film).

Ha-sun is an orphan who lost his biological parents to a plague, and he begged and wandered the country with his adopted sister, until they were almost at death’s door from starvation. An acting troupe saved them, and ever since then, he’s been a clown-actor who fears nothing on the stage. By a series of circumstances, he ends up as a fake king on the Jade Throne, and despite his best efforts, he falls for the king’s wife, Queen So-woon, played by Lee Se-young.

Yi Heon, who had never known love from his parents, found peace when he married So-woon. However, due to his paranoia and the constant palace deceit, his relationship with her deteriorated. So when he and Ha-sun trade places, he’ll be placed in a position where he’s envious of his alter ego as So-woon (who knows nothing about the switcheroo) begins falling in love with this new side of her estranged “husband.”

The drama production team has revealed that they want to tell this story in a new way—showing the perspective that the throne is not a place to wield power selfishly and absolutely, but rather, it is a lonely place of sacrifice for the people. Already I’m getting the heart-wrenching feels!

No doubt Yeo Jin-goo will be excellent as always, and Lee Se-young is no stranger to sageuks (The King’s Dream, Dae Jang Geum) so I have high hopes. Because they’re both well-known child stars, I thought they may have crossed paths earlier. They do have I Miss You on both their filmographies, but Yeo Jin-gu was only in the childhood scenes, while Lee Se-young had a supporting role in the present-day scenes. So it looks like this will be the first time they’ll be acting with each other.

The Man Who Became King is set to air on tvN early next year.

Yeo Jin-Goo & Lee Se-Young cast in tvN drama series “Masquerade”

Masquerade-CS1.jpg&key=c6f1cd407454157b7

Yeo Jin-Goo and Lee Se-Young are cast in upcoming tvN drama series “Masquerade.” The drama series is a remake of 2012 movie “Masquerade” starring Lee Byung-Hun and Han Hyo-Joo. For the drama series version, Yeo Jin-Goo will play dual roles of King Lee Hun and Clown Ha Sun. Because the King and the clown look so similar, the clown is brought to the palace to fill in for the King as potential assassination attempts on the King brew. Lee Se-Young will play the role of Queen Yoo So-Woon. The clown, who is filling in for the King, falls for the Queen.

“Masquerade” will first air January, 2019 in South Korea.

First script read for The Man Who Became King

Film-adapted-to-drama The Man Who Became King is a proper prince-and-pauper story loosely based on Prince Gwanghae. In the lead role is the talented Yeo Jin-gu (Reunited Worlds), who plays two roles: Prince Yi Heon and the commoner clown who looks exactly like him. The script read was held recently, and photos from it have been released.

The Man Who Became King tells the story of how the prince ends up switching places with the clown, and the hijinks and great changes that ensue. The pressures of palace life, the deceit, and constant fear of assassination make the prince decide to position a clown in his place. However, leaving the palace doesn’t just lead to absolute peace and comfort for the prince, as his wife begins for fall for his double. Lee Se-young (Hwayugi) will play Prince Yi Heon’s wife, who starts falling in love with her “husband” after the switch occurs.

Kim Sang-kyung (Jang Young-shil) plays the royal chief secretary who brings the clown into the palace on behalf of the prince. Jung Hye-young (Goodbye to Goodbye) plays a gisaeng who has feelings for the chief secretary. Then there’s actor Jang Kwang (About Time) who was in the original film, and he joins the cast as a eunuch who helps the clown pretend to be the prince.

On the other side, there’s Kwon Hae-hyo (Lingerie Girls’ Generation), who plays the Vice Premier who plots against Prince Yi Heon. Additionally, Jang Young-nam (Hundred Million Stars From the Sky) plays the dowager empress who seeks to gain power over Prince Yi Heon.

maskscripread3.jpg

maskscripread2.jpg

Others in the supporting cast who were at the script read include: Yoon Jong-seok (The Guest), Oh Ha-nee (The Great Seducer), Yoon Kyung-ho (Fox Bride Star), and Seo Yoon-ah (Matrimonial Chaos).

PD Kim Hee-won (Money Flower) began the script read with this statement: “Casting took a long time, and gathering these actors whom I’ve wanted to work with for this drama was worth the effort. I’m so grateful and happy.” Adding to the sentiment, writer Kim Seon-duk said, “We have waited for this moment. Because we have waited for so long, we cannot expect anything more. We will try our best.”

According to reports, the overall tempo was good, the dynamic and chemistry between the actors were riveting, and each became immersed into his or her role. But the script read was also full of ad-libs and laughter. tvN’s The Man Who Became King, directed by Kim Hee-won and written by Kim Seon-duk and Shin Ha-eun, will air in 2019.

Yeo Jin-gu, Lee Se-young become the king and queen of Joseon

There’s been a dearth of sageuks in dramaland recently, and so I can’t wait for The Man Who Became King, the remake of the 2012 hit film Masquerade (also known as Gwanghae). Recently, still cuts of the two main actors were released, and the gorgeous hanboks are getting me doubly excited! Yeo Jin-gu (Reunited Worlds) stars in a dual role as a Joseon king and also a clown who looks identical to the king. Actress Lee Se-young (Hwayugi) transforms into his gentle but tenacious queen for her role in this drama.

To set the scene, this king is surrounded by enemies who constantly threaten his life. When he’s at the end of his rope, he devises a strategy to escape them. He finds a clown who looks exactly like him, and they end up switching places. To protect the people he loves, the king must fool even the people closest to him, including the queen.

The problem is when the queen begins to fall in love with this “new side” of the king after the switch occurs. Will the happy-go-lucky clown or the charismatic but paranoid king be the ultimate conqueror of the queen’s heart — or will everything end in tragedy? I’m ready for the hurt-that-feels-so-good to begin.

tvN’s Monday-Tuesday drama The Man Who Became King, written by Kim Seon-deok and Shin Ha-eun and directed by Kim Hee-won, will begin broadcast on January 7, 2019.
