Does Kpop Need Better Vocal Coaches?

Way too many idols are guilty of using bad vocal techniques. You can always tell when idols are straining their voices, and it’s honestly worrying. Speaking of strained vocals, the obsession with high notes is super unhealthy.

Idols without strong vocals struggle to reach notes they just weren’t meant to reach (just because you can, doesn’t mean you should). And the idols who actually have strong vocals are expected to belt CONSTANTLY, which can damage their voices if they don’t know what they’re doing.

I don’t understand how all of these people received professional training for YEARS, yet still struggle with these issues.

JIhyo from Twice was trained for so long but her technique is below expectation. her coach tell her to hit high note without proper technique, she sounds like shout out and end up strain

Rose also has weak technique. her voice was good before YG damage her voice

Maybe yes. But it's not that important since audience actually don't care about vocal that much

SM's coaches have been consistently good over the years: not only are a lot of the best vocalists in kpop in SM groups, SM idols often also keep increasing their vocal prowess and skills as the years go on.

Also, trainees of contest shows like Kpop Star made significant progress vocally in a few weeks when they got coached by Boa's SM team.

Other companies, a lot of them either don't have the resources or the priority to provide great vocal coaches. For YG and JYP it doesn't seem to be a priority at all, even worse, their idols sometimes even deteriorate with their voice over the years due to bad technique.

RBW seems to have focus on vocals and vocal coaching.

Some other companies, couldn't tell. Maybe Woollim and Cube too?

Posting in Onehallyu won't help neither.:)

Forums are usually used for discussions, and that’s what I’m trying to do. If you’re not interested, you’re welcome to continuing spamming your Chinese propaganda threads :)

It's the same in my country and US/UK music tho

I mean this can be applied to every music industry, but I’m specifically talking about kpop

Better vocal coaches (sometimes I really wonder if they have an coach at all...) and they need to understand what fits to the voices musicwise. I will never understand how the lines are distributed, if it is for the sake of the popular members have more screentime. But yeah.. Kpop is not really aimed for quality vocals ahmagahplz.png

IKR

and sometimes they try to impress or cover how bad the song is with it but it's still a bad song overall *cough* that final Korean PD48 song imstupid.png.

I think recent Kpop songs keep getting higher and higher ... they don't care about how high the song is for some idol vocal range, some of those idols still can hit it but it's unpleasant to hear.

THIS. Most of those notes are basically just shouted with super unhealthy technique. But it's an easy crowd pleaser, youtube comment section will always be full of "omg that high note" doesn't matter how strained it sounds. And K-Pop is all about crowd pleasing, I doubt the longevity of their artists' vocals ranks very high on their list of priorities.

and at least half the songs are just TOO HIGH. But again, it's what the public likes, doesn't matter if the artist can actually sing it well. That's what the backing track is for and if the poor singers are dragged sometimes when they actually sing it live, well that barely matters.

I love how in PD48, often the girls had trouble hitting the high note in a song so they showed their struggle, and then they suddenly screeched out the note and everyone was like "yes, finally, there you go, that was awesome!" and even repeated the shouty high note many times to show that "she really hit that high note!"

I wish if the idols couldn't sing that high note properly (that means not screaming it), then they shouldn't do it at all. But as others said, Kpop and pop music in general is sadly just obsessed with high notes.

And to answer your question, yes they 100% need better vocal coaches lol

they should hire woollim's vocal coaches. I don't know their names tho.

^

like THERE ARE great vocal coaches in kpop

generalising in broad strokes here ofc, but wm, sm, woollim and many other companies with them have a roster of excellent vocal coaches and idols with impeccable technique. so it's not like there's a lack of supply here, but for some reason it's not prioritised always by all idols/their management - there could be many reasons for this tho.
