I feel like this is not exclusively a French thing, it happens with a lot other foreign celebrities who make it big in the US (Penelope Cruz, Zhang Ziyi, Freida Pinto etc.). I'm sad for Marion as I thought she was a sure win.

Xavier Dolan deserved it more than Godard on this one...

This has nothing to do with the French people but the juries who happen to be from 7 foreign countries (not counting Carole Bouquet).

But yeah, she's not that famous anymore. Involving herself in too many Hollywood movies is a buzzkill. Let's see if she can still make it when Deux jours, Une Nuit will come out.

Xavier was all over the news yesterday >.>

is he popular in France?

He is very well known name in the press (because of the great quality of his release) and he has a huge support in the gay community but he is not a seller (like every gay friend I have know his name).

His film's box office attendance are low (which is quite unexpected considering his film can be seen in a lot of cinemas) :

J'ai tué ma mère / I Killed my Mother : 20 000

Les Amours Imaginaires : 100 000+

Tom à la Ferme : 100 000 in one week

A good sucess in the cinema go between 5 millions to 20 millions of attendance so it's not a very good performance...

He may blow up because of Cannes this year but I'm quite surprised because he's all over the news and has very good press. I guess he has too much a "gay aura".

I know, I was just commenting on her losing in her home country. She got rave reviews for Deux jours, une nuit and so many critics predicted her winning. Tbh I usually find her better at acting in her mother tongue, compared to American films. I don't have many expectations for Macbeth.

Oh I see, I guess the accent has to do with it, not tha it's the main reason but it could play a role in it.

It has nothing to do with that though. She had a huge momentum and she killed it by doing nothing but Hollywood movies, and she lost the hype . But I don't doubt it's much more rewarding to be a Hollywood star.
