I guess it depends. If we'd been together for a long time and his nieces were mature enough to handle that information, then maybe I'd be annoyed and I'd ask him what's up. But I also know that children at that age can be brats and he might just want to avoid them prying into his personal life (and then also telling everyone they know because kids are like that).
