But alternative music isn't a genre...it's alternative. You can have alternative rock, folk, punk, dance, e.t.c. Do you really not like all alternative music? I don't think I could only listen to charting and top 40 music my whole life. It's not pretentious or hipster just because it's new or not the usual. How can music genres evolve if they just stay the same? Alternative is a genre. And no, I wouldn't say I dislike the entire genre. But the songs blowing up from the genre are horrible and lasting way too long. I hate the slower, more adult-contemporary based songs because they get radio support from the slowest-moving formats and get radio play much, much longer than they deserve. It would be one things if these songs were "evolving" anything, but they're just generic, toned-down versions of songs and to top it off, their compositions aren't anything special.
