Chapter One

Giselle Hedges is my real name, if you were about to ask. I’m seventeen and I don’t socialize. Like, I don’t know how the actual world works out there. It’s odd, I know but I never went out there to explore anything since I had this ‘disorder’ which people might say it’s kind of tragedy. I only home-school; my mum pays this young teacher to teach me a few subjects like Mathematics, Science and Literature. Her name is Madeline and she’s a sweet teacher whom I adore her a lot. I spend most of my time in my bed, perhaps I do ‘role-play’ or read fanfiction written by unknown authors. They’re good, I have to admit and reading fanfiction is just a part of me. I couldn’t get rid of it which I assume it’s a good thing.

“Giselle,†mum called my name and she took a deep breath, pausing for a moment.

“Yes?†I breathed too.

“Do you really enjoy spending your whole life here?†She questioned, her eyes were looking at my hand holding my iPhone.

“Yes, I do.â€

“You are seventeen and you have to explore what’s the true meaning of ‘life’.†She remarked, heaving out a sigh as she sat herself next to me on the bed. I moved to the other side slightly to give her some spaces.

“So, both of you are having girls talk?†A hoarse voice said out of nowhere; it was my father’s which I already got to detect his familiar voice.

I managed to smile.

“So…†I put my hands together, trying to figure out what both my parents were trying to say. My dad finally sat on my left side and now I got stuck between both of them.

“We have come to the conclusion that we’re going to send you to London. Your Aunty McPhee wants to meet you since summer is ahead.†Mum said.

I blinked, “London? No way, mum!†I exclaimed in shock. I was shocked, of course. Travelling to London alone? That’s hell to the no—I don’t actually know how to travel alone because there might be some freaks trying to disturb me.

“Yes, London,†Dad continued. “Don’t worry; I’ve booked the flight ticket for you, honey.†He slowly nodded his head and hummed in thoughts afterwards, “Maybe, you’re going to London less in 2 weeks, so I assume that you have to pack your bag next week and we should buy some food for you.â€

My parents almost drive me insane. I don’t want to go to London, because why should I? If I remember, the last time I travelled to overseas is when I was five and at that moment, I didn’t have that disorder.

About the ‘disorder’, none of my family member tells me about it. They all keep quiet and I feel that it’s like a secret. They zip their mouths for how many years which I lost my track—I don’t even get to count how many years have they kept this as secret, so I just let it go instead.

“London…†I said, my hands started to shake.

“Yes, London—you’re going to have a great day in Aunty McPhee’s house, no worries, my sugarcane.†Dad laughed.

He likes to call me ‘sugarcane’ and it’s like a nickname given by him to me. Just because I used to look like a panda, he automatically called me ‘sugarcane’ because he didn’t want to hurt me by calling me panda because FYI I used to be chubby like a panda.

“Stop calling me sugarcane, dad. I am not ‘sugarcane’ anymore.†I snorted a bit, loud enough for him to hear and he just cleared his throat.

“So, are you going to London, honey?†Mum finally reached for my hands, holding both of them tightly with hers.

I smiled with a corner of my mouth, finally. Mum surely knows how to comfort me, but hey, I do love my dad too. He’s just a tease.

“I will try to think of it. I can’t guarantee you— maybe I will.†I shrugged.

“I have booked you your flight ticket, remember?â€

“I don’t,†I lied.

“Lies.â€

“Oh come on, dad. You just told me a few minutes ago—how could I forget about it so soon?†I laughed, and so did my dad and mum.

I somehow feel happy out of the blue and it begins to spark inside me. Did something happen to me?

Chapter Two

Counting days and here I am. It’s the second week and I am going to London, finally. Well, I have been forced by my parents to travel to London just because of my ‘Auntie McPhee’ misses me which I am sure that she doesn’t miss me at all—mum likes to make up stories which don’t exist for example; that story or maybe I might be wrong.

My dad helped me to get some food like instant noodles, snacks and drinks. I am going to travel alone, yes alone. Alone is the synonym to ‘myself’. The fact that I am an anti-social girl, travelling alone actually sounds scary to me. Who knows I might get threated by those freaks just like I thought the first time when my parents forced me to have my days off to London.

“You’re going to be fine!†Mum said, patting my back for a few times. She smiled brightly indeed when she was still patting my back.

“Uh, yeah, you’ll be fine, honey. Don’t worry—or should I say ‘sugarcane’?†Dad, once again, he’s being such a tease again. Stop it, dad.

I half smiled, “Stop worrying about me. I will try my best to take care of myself, mum, dad.â€

“It’s going to be fun, I believe. I hope that you will get to know the true meaning of ‘life’. Your dad and I have been planning this thing since last few years and both of us decide that this is the right time for you to explore the world outside with various kinds of people.â€

“I know,†I nodded my head slowly and bit my bottom lip slightly.

Dad helped to put my bags inside the car and mum planted a kiss on my head like she usually did when I was in the third grade. I smiled and wrapped my arms around her for the last time before I left the country to London.

Mum couldn’t get to join since she has some work to be done. Dad is free, so he is the only person who could send me to the airport, luckily. If Dad is busy too as well, then I will be doomed because I might get a cab to the airport, alone.

I hate the word ‘alone’ though frankly speaking or shouldn’t I?

Just like I said, I am the person who dislikes socializing. But when I try to think about it once again, I find it somehow scary. No, not that kind of ‘scary’, but it’s kind of odd ‘scary’. I don’t know if you get what I am trying to say, but I am confirmed to be scary.

I was sitting in the seat, my earphones plugged inside my ears as I listened to some songs playing on my Walkman. Currently, ‘Starring Role by Marina and the Diamonds’ was playing and I slowly closed my eyes. I love the song as Marina and the Diamonds is my idol, I adore her, of course. I kept replaying the song; however, Dad suddenly pulled my left earphone.

“Hey, hey,†he waved a hand in front of me. His right hand surely distracted me from falling asleep. I was about to ‘sleep’ in fact, but hey, dad just woke me up!

I paused my Walkman and turned to my left side slightly to face him, “Yes, dad?â€

“Are you sure that you’re going to be fine alone?â€

“Of course, I will.â€

“I am scared that something might happen to you.â€

“No, no. Nothing will happen to me, trust me. I’m grown-up anyway,†I lied. Actually, I am almost at the high-risk level which almost leads me to S-U-I-C-I-D-E.

He raised his eyebrow, “You sure, honey?â€

“Yes, I am very sure.â€

“Your mother just wishes the best for you. She feels pity for you though. She doesn’t want to see you spending your whole time; 24/7 in your room where you are growing up in since you were five.â€

“I know.â€

“So, don’t think that we’re trying to ‘send you away’ just because we don’t like you.†He cleared his throat a bit.

“I won’t.â€

My phone vibrated on my jeaned lap. It was my brother, Hans.

TEXT BY HANS:

SO, SISTER, ARE YOU GOING TO LONDON TODAY? I AM GOING TO WISH YOU ALL THE BEST. THIS IS SHOCKING NEWS FOR ME BUT HEY, YOU’RE GROWING UP, RIGHT? –NOT YOUR BROTHER, HANS, IT’S H.

My brother would never admit his real name. He kept asking me to call him H instead of Hans. He found that Hans was pretty hard for him to pronounce it since he always ended up pronouncing it as H-A-S instead of H-A-N-S. So, he decided to shorten his name from HANS to H.

“Did someone just text you, honey?â€

“Yeah, it’s H.â€

“Oh, H who—?â€

Dad really has no idea who H is so I try to explain him the same thing and he goes OH.

“I knew it was Hans.â€

“I know, who else I’d text?†I laughed and placed my phone back on my lap, shoving both of my hands inside my pockets as it was quite breezy.

“Well, it’d be your mother, sugarcane,†he snorted and lowered the temperature of the air conditioner.  â€œFeeling much better now?â€

I nodded, “Thank you.â€

“It seems like that we’re just miles away from the airport. I couldn’t believe that you’re really going to travel by your own.â€

“Dad, you repeat the same thing—â€

“I know, I just—â€

I cleared my throat and slowly nodded my head lightly, “I know, dad. I feel you.†I patted his shoulder and chuckles emitted from his lips.
