You can leave a relationship in general whenever the hell you want, just for the case of divorcing someone it might involve some monetary/property loss (and in the latter case, replacing whatever you lost is likely doable at some point). On the other hand, you typically can't give up a kid if you decided to keep it, and just up and walking away typically comes with actual legal consequences.
