Does anyone here like reading Yuri manga?

So, exactly what the title says. If you do, what's your favorite manga? It can be a Chinese, Korean, or Japanese comic, cause there's good yuri from each country.

My favorite from each respectable country is:

Korean: The Love Doctor

Japanese: Strawberry Shake

Chinese: Tamen de Gushi (Their Story)

I did, mostly because I'm gay :v

I strongly recommend Girlfriends (but you must have already read it) on webtoon you can read Always human.

Same lmao. Also yeah, already read both of those. Oh! Idk if you've read it yet, but you should read Mage and Demon Queen, that's also on webtoons. It's cute af.

I already read it lol. The curse. It's hard to find good content. Maybe you can try with "yuri"/lesbic books?

I'll make a list with links if you want? There's gonna be a few on this site called lezhin where you'll have to buy it, but those Korean manhwas are great so it's worth the money.

I started reading fluttering feelings as it showed up on my 'newest' feed back when I was reading more, and since then I've been hoping to find yuri manga like it. Thank you for the recommendations!

some totally unrelated musings

What I found interesting was that I started to understand what heteronormativity means through reading yuri manga tbh. I don't think I'm gay but, as I was reading a lot of yuri manga then, I started to pair the female leads in movies/dramas I was watching together, rather than male/female as I usually did, and also pretty much ignore the male leads' interactions altogether. So that's when I started realising what an effect the surroundings have on my thought process.

That's interesting, looking back at it, I think the same happened to me. I actually am gay though so this also plays a part. But like, when I first started questioning, it was cause I was actually exposed to the possibility of two women together through fanfics. Before then, I thought that there's nothing else possible but a man and a woman together. This is honestly really common in a lot of people who are questioning their sexuality. If they hadn't been exposed to it before, they would've thought that there was nothing else but straight relationships. This is part of the reason why I think it's so important to have gay relationships portrayed cause I would not have been happy if I still thought I was straight.

Yes, I think it's important too. I possibly started reading yuri manga (and also lesbian romance novels tbh, still think Melissa Brayden is one of the best romance writers out there, lesbian or straight) during a time when I suppose I was also questioning. I haven't yet been in a relationship, so I wouldn't know for sure tbh, but consuming both het and yuri content together just sort of equalised how I see gay and straight relationships now. I don't think I'm gay because reading and watching all this content made me think I'm currently hovering somewhere around ace/straight, though I suppose that can change. But I would say while I didn't really care either way previously, I had a lot of preconceptions involving relationships, that I am only now aware of, and now no longer see in the same way. It's that change in perception that I think helped me become more sympathetic and supportive of my gay friends and acquaintances, rather than anything else.

I totally get what you mean. I know a lot of people have some conceptions of relationships based on what they usually see and it's really unhealthy. It's mainly why I don't really consume media that focuses on het relationships anymore. An example being men who call being married to a woman a prison or some such which is just toxic thinking. Like why would you marry someone if that's how you feel? There's other toxic perspectives like the male and female role in a relationship that isn't present in female/female or male/male ones. This has more to do with gender perspectives mixing in, but I really can't stand that type of thinking anymore. It's just really restrictive and also why I prefer reading fiction written by gay women themselves. I find it more often than not that stuff written by straight women end up falling into the trap of having preset roles for a relationship when that's just weird since people don't work like that.

Ah yeah, I noticed that too in het media, I honestly think it's very troubling. Sexism really affects how relationships are portrayed, which then reinforces sexist thinking. I do think that there are other toxic perspectives in yuri media too (I haven't gotten into yaoi yet.. don't think i ever will tbh) but some of it is because of the heteronormative preconceptions mixed in  - I think that's very worrying, because younger kids who are starting to explore will probably start from this kind of content.

I haven't been in a relationship before, as I've mentioned, but I do date, and increasingly I feel very frustrated with gender roles. For example, I feel obligated in a certain way if I allow my date to pay for me and I don't appreciate that at all. Yet, it's sometimes difficult to get them to understand that I genuinely don't want them to pay, and then if they've paid it doesn't mean I will want to continue dating them.

Yeah definitely. There's harmful stuff in yuri too but I usually find it from more classic types of yuri as opposed to the newer stuff. There's this thing called Class S in yuri where it's usually set in an all girls school and the girls basically date for just the time they're there until they move and graduate, after which they end up getting married and have a husband. Yuri definitely has harmful tropes like this, but I meant just LGBT presence in general.

A lot of the toxicity in het relationships come from gender roles, which is why normal gay relationships don't really have that problem since like, they're the same gender. It's really just that simple, which is why being able to see the possibility of a relationship like that will help het relationships, too. Cause it shows that relationships don't have to be restricted to just roles and being a guy or a girl shouldn't restrict you from acting as yourself.
