Identity Crisis 109 Posted July 18, 2018 Share Posted July 18, 2018 As someone that listens to a lot of Canadian rap - mostly of the classic stuff from the early to mid 2000's - I cannot overstate how important Drake was for giving Canadian rap, especially from Toronto, a clear and very identifiable voice that people can point to, as much as I love people like k-os, Saukrates, Shad and others. That being said, Drake's earlier output is incredibly good, and works incredibly well for what it is. I liken it to a bowl of chicken noodle soup - not too complex, but fulfilling enough. It's ironic that the one album which was very much a stop gap throwaway in IYRTITL is probably his best work. but nowadays, yeah, he's pretty average. Scorpion was really average, with only a few somewhat decent songs compared to earlier albums where at least half the songs were good. If you want a fantastic Canadian rapper who came from the wake of Drake, I cannot recommend Jazz Cartier enough. His sound is pretty much Drake's but much more mature and even more fulfilling to listen to. His new album Fleurever drops on July 27th. Listen to it people.
