no im not a "pressed chart obsessed once XD" who's seething at the thought of twice losing a pak or #1 i just saw some weird stuff not related to the actual charting itself but like the type of songs and situations

nilo's song was released in october and rose from like the 100s to 1st in april

and shaun's song is a b-side from his album released a month ago

but hey

at least shaun's song aint a snooze

I have no qualms in this whole thing but it is quite weird that both of these songs just so happened to come up just as twice would have otherwise been the #1 on the charts, especially considering that twice would be getting a PAK after a PAK otherwise.

Are these songs coming up on other platforms too or just melon?

i mean it was joked about that a nugu would rise during this cb but it actually happened lmao for it to happen 2 times in a row and for the songs to both be in weird situations its a bit odd

like sure nugus can rise but coincidentally right in april with a 6 month old song? and in july with a b-side from june? hnn both when twice came back, cause i dont see nugus rising especially to number 1 in the break that twice came back, and before nilo it was like almost unheard of to see a nugu rise that quick esp to #1

at the start nilo was reallyy low on other platforms except melon but then he started gaining that recognition lol and charted higher on other charts

it was interesting at one stage all charts were high except for 1 which i forgot but it was convenientally the 1 chart company his company wasnt affiliated with

but with shaun he's generally high on most charts now, hes 13 on naver tho and 21 on soribada

can someone explain this whole nilo / shaun / sajaegi thing because i have no clue what any of those are

Nilo, Shaun and one other guy use the service of a company called Limez, who claim to be experts in "viral marketing". Apparently, they promote via a facebook page, where they encourage facebook members to give songs a listen. The controversy is that (1) the facebook page did not (at least during Nilo's issue) identify itself as someone connected to the artist in question, which is illegal in SK. and (2) even taking account the issue of viral popularity (i.e. Exid's Up and Down), the chart progress of Nilo and Shaun's popularity on the charts do not match other songs in similar circumstances, i.e. they rose too fast on the charts raising suspicions over the use of bots to raise views.

With Nilo, there were additional suspicions raised - Nilo's song gained popularity on the chart, despite not even being listed or charting on Karaoke charts (it has since, but still doesn't explain its initial popularity). Also, Limez and Nilo apparently approach Radio Star to be on the show with the topic of "Recharting Success". The only problem is, they submitted the proposal before Nilo's actual recharting happened. Fast forward to about a month ago. Mind you, Nilo's song has been charting on or just off Melon's top 10...since April. You are looking at 12+ weeks, and if he was an idol, people would be raving about his success and chart prowess. Yet, he had to cancel a joint concert due to poor sales, though organizers claimed harassment. So here's a guy who outcharted idols and remained at or just of the Top 10 for 3 months, and yet nobody wanted to see him in concert.

In the case of Shaun, the song was released a month ago, and is a b-side with no MVs, suddenly rising to No.1 within the span of less than a week. Surprise surprise, Shaun also makes us of Limez Network's "viral marketing" services.

People on OH and elsewhere like to paint this as idol fandoms being butthurt that their faves are not getting PAKs and CAKs and whatnot, and as some kind of attack on indie musicians. But while it's true that kpop is not the whole music industry in Korea, very few singers actually have the fanbase to compete with idol fandoms in SK when it comes to streaming and charting. IU, BOL4 are just a few who can knock idols off top chart positions. In Nilo's case, he outcharted both Twice and EXO-CBX. As for Shaun, not only has he outcharted Twice, he also outcharted BlackPink (who had higher unique listeners on Melon than Twice), Apink, as well as Mamamoo, who just released a few days ago. This from a guy who had limited public awareness just a few days ago.

The problem with Limez Network is that it is also connected via business alliance to streaming sites like Genie, Melon and Mnet, so concerns have been raised by the public as well as JYPE that some chart manipulation may be at play.

I hope you realize that JYPE, YG, SM etc are also connected to Genie, Melon, Mnet etc

The k-entertainment industry is full of back-channel links that it's hard to know where things begins and ends. JYPE, YGE, and SME have the closest links to iRiver, formerly an audio equipment company, and now being developed to be another online music distribution company (like Melon) in partnership with main owner SK Telecom. New service is launching 2nd half 2018. Mnet is owned by by CJ E&M, under the CJ group. Agencies under CJ E&M include Stone Music, Music Works, Jellyfish Ent, AOMG, and Ameoba Culture. Melon is owned by Kakao M (formerly Loen), who also owns agencies such as Fave, Plan A, and Starship. The only music distribution company that has ownership links to the Big3 is Genie - Big 3 consortium owns about 7% of Genie.

Everything in SK's entertainment industry is not only getting vertically integrated, bu also potentially getting siloed, i.e. music getting distributed within the respective vertically integrated conglomerate.

I've said it a few times in OH...talk of the Big3 is passe. When "small" agencies are owned by public listed media giants like Kakao M and CJ E&M, you really can't call them small anymore. Probably the only relatively independent agencies outside the Big3 are Pledis and FNC, for the moment. Scratch that - Pledis is 50% owned by So-Net (Under Sony Japan), and is currently in discussion for CJ E&M to acquire 51% of Pledis.
