Smartphone advice

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about finally upgrading to a smartphone this summer, and I need some advice about the pros and cons of each. I'm choosing between iPhone, Samsung, and HTC. I've heard that the iphone is more user friendly, which would probably be a plus for me as someone who will need to learn and get used to using a smartphone. But iphones, especially the newest versions, are expensive though. So if I buy one, I want it to be extremely worthwhile.

I'll mostly be using it to check emails on the go, look up directions to places, browse internet, and playing game apps or using social apps like snapchat. I would also probably use it for pictures and music, but not as heavily.

If I go with android phone, I've heard samsung and htc are about the same. Most people seem to say samsung has the edge though. But I do prefer the sleek design of htc more. Even though they're about the same size, samsung seems clunkier and bulkier because of its design.

I would personally suggest an iPhone 4s, I have two and they really are user friendly, really easy to use. I would advise you to not get an iPhone 5, my sister has one and it feels more plastic and she's bought 2 cables for it in one year whereas mines has lasted longer

iPhone is easier to use, but I personally prefer Android because I get to do more customization, I find the iPhone interface too rigid and boring after a while, but that's just my personal preference. I also find the screen a little small haha.

Have you thought which samsung or htc devices to consider? I would choose HTC One series > Samsung galaxy S series. Samsung offers a lot of interesting perks like scroll eye control and others but I've tried some out and I think it's fun to have and play around with but we probably won't use it on the day-to-day basis. i'm using a HTC One right now and I'm happy with it. My family uses Samsung. I don't like the interface of Samsung because it's not so pleasing to my eyes haha. If you like a wide angle camera on your phone and also a wonderful (i mean it, wonderful) speaker, you can consider HTC One. There's another android device, google nexus, that you can consider as well. It's much cheaper compared to samsung/htc but it offers almost the same specs. A lot people say Samsung is very good because of their marketing skills.

At the end of the day, everybody would have different preferences, so I would suggest you watch and read online reviews and also play with some display sets to determine which suits you best.

i went to the mall a couple days ago to look at phones... the latest ones atm are Samsung Galaxy S2 and Sony Xperia Z2. Both are around the same price and size, as for look I think the Z2 is prettier. According to the info, the S2 is water resistant while the Z2 is waterproof. Z2 specs seem to be a little better as well...

i didn't buy because  the monthly data + voice plans are currently so expensive compared to what i'm paying now. I'm just gonna wait until they hold a promo or something to get a new phone.

I actually prefer iphone because of it's small size. Other smartphones are really big, and seem unnatural as a phone to me. But maybe it's something I'd get used to. And yeah, I'd be choosing between HTC the one and Samsung galaxy series. Is there a reason google nexus is cheaper? I don't want to trade quality for cheaper price.

If you are looking for a good smartphone but on a budget I recommend the Motorola Moto G. You can get the android kitkat os on it and it does everything you want in your op.

Same question as with the google nexus, is there a reason the motorola phone is cheaper? I don't want to trade quality for cheaper price.

If not mistaken, Google Nexus was manufactured by Google with one of the goal being to encourage people to use Android. So it also brings more profit to them through the software side of things, eg. play store. So instead of other manufacturers where their main profit comes from selling phones, Google doesn't need to put their phone prices so high. I can tell you that you won't be getting a phone of lower quality. My brother uses google nexus and so are some people that I know, especially those that are super-android fans. It's an android phone without the addition of samsung/htc interface, giving a very smooth pure android feel. And you get the fastest updates of android through nexus. So you don't have to worry about your phone not getting software updates in the future because nexus phones will always get them. I was supposed to buy a nexus phone but then the newest version wasn't getting released anytime soon, so I bought HTC One instead. Out of all the android phone interfaces, I enjoyed the Nexus ones the most, they're so simple looking and so smooth to use.

Iphone!!

Do not get samsung my friend has the s4 and hates it

It lags, dies quickly and cracks soo easily, she had to replace her phone about 5 times in just a year, she wants to switch to iphone by next year

Iphone doesn't crack easily, I drop it a lot!! And it still doesn't have a scratch, it's fast, lasts long, the camera quality is awesome, easy to use, the App Store >>>, and the retina display is awesome too! Never had a problem

Get the iPhone 5s, it's beautiful

Don't get Iphones. You drop it once and they shatter.

#experienced #neveragain #toomuchsadness

Get a Sony Xperia z2 or a Htc. They actually look good and work amazingly. I hate the look of all Samsungs. Their layouts looks childish and cheap.

That is bs tbh, I've had iphone and iPods since the first generation and I only cracked and scratched one. I drop it ALOT too

I heard htc is good tho

Hmm, I'll definitely have to consider this one then. Why is it that nexus phones will always get future updates but other ones don't? Another big concern I have about iPhone is not being able to get updates once newer phones come out.

buy Xperia Z2 i hope i have money to buy it i bought iphone 5s already last two weeks it's not as good as Z2 i wish i could control time to change my poor choice    :._.:

Why do you like the Xperia over the iphone?

I like the iphone the best because I don't like google Play. But don't get any Samsung phone. All of my aunts and some of my friends have the Samsung Galaxy s3 & s4 and they hate it. Their phones are always dying, all of their screens are cracked, the smart gestures don't work, they look cheap and they overheat. It sucks for them tho because most of them have contract so they can't change it. My aunts are satisfied with the performance but they hate the battery. We went on a car trip and all of them were fighting for the charger. It's like they don't even last 2 hours.

I like the Iphone but I hate that you can't change the battery easily. I have a cousin that can change it (he's a tech geek) but there's always that chance of the phone getting messed up. Besides that it's awesome! My friend has had the Iphone 4 since it came out and it still works. The only thing is that the camera messed up and the home button doesn't work. I have the 5s and I couldn't be happier :ahmagah:

I heard the HTC one is good but 2 of my cousins had it and they both got rid of them after a month of getting it (one of them switched to Iphone). And the battery doesn't last long either.

The Sony Xperia Z1 and Z2 are good ! They're waterproof, dust proof and the cams are awesome. The only thing I don't like is the screen. It's like you can see white lines on the edges... It's not obvious but if you look for them, you'll find them and it'll annoy the hell out of you. They look really nice tho. Very fancy lol. I love way they look. Another thing is that I think you can't take out the battery. I'm not sure about that tho.

Iphone - Been in the business longer --> More experience = Large software/app library + Strong third party support; Great Social Network Integration; 4G/LTE Support; Small compact/ergonomic design

But...

Rather than listening to my amateurish advice, I'd recommend watching video reviews of those smartphones; preferably reviews from MKBHD (Marques Brownlee).  Here's his YouTube channel:  https://www.youtube.com/user/marquesbrownlee/videos

For phones manufactured by other companies, they need to get the updated software and customize it to suit their own interface before being released. Over a long time, they may not release it anymore. Google phones are different because the software is made by Google itself. Google said their phones would get updates, whether or not it has changed I'm not too sure. For android phones, if your manufacturer doesn't release an official update, you could get some online where it's made by others like CyanogenMod. I haven't tried it out before but I heard they work.

So you're basically saying your anecdotal evidence is completely trustworthy while WendyHK's anecdotal evidence is completely false? This of course ignoring the fact that anecdotal evidence isn't evidence at all.

For the record, I had an iPhone 3GS then a Galaxy S2 and now a Galaxy S4 and the iPhone is the only one I've had to take in for repairs. My sister (whose a habitual phone destroyer) had an iPhone which she broke and now has an Galaxy S3 with nary a scratch on it.

If I were to advice the OP I would tell them to choose between a Samsung and an HTC. The control Apple requires over a phone you paid for is ridiculous. I want to use my hardware as I see fit, not as the manufacturer is willing to allow me. Personally I choose the S4 over the HTC One because the S4 has a slot for a micro-SD card while the HTC does not.

The Galaxy s2!? Girl, it should already be s5! Where do you live?
