??Now I'm curious about what the article is saying.............

edit:

it's more like this ranking is a composite, you have the sub ranking in it (streaming, downloads, physical sales + other metrics) and these 3 artists are still doing quite well without SNS and Youtube

if anyone is curious i skimmed through the article and the main points are:

- kenshi yonezu, twice, bts were chosen as "top artists" bc they did well in digital, physical and sns category.

- nogizaka, namei amuro, akb did well in physical category but not in buzz category (sns + streaming, download)

- hoshino gen, wanima, one ok rock, mr.children, backnumber did well in buzz category

- johnny's groups ranked in despite the bad results in buzz category thanks to their high physicals. writer acknowledge that they'd place higher if not ban on digital media.

ps:physicals were counted by how many times CD was read by the scanner (?) so basically besides sales they'd also counted how many times CD was rented.

Billboard counts sns and YouTube while Oricon doesn’t.

It does say a lot about the state of pop in Japan, but not just because kpop's in there.

Ed Sheeran's #17 with just one song that's over a year old now

true. probably why kpop was not mentioned in the article?

like someone else said it's more about 2 and 3 being foreign acts...which just so happen to be kpop.

edit: tbh ed sheeran being on the list does not say much. he's literally on everyone's pop list. no surprise there.

Well, Tamar Herman's a kpop writer for Billboard, so I assumed her tweet implied it had something to do with kpop.

Suda Masaki is on the list too, with basically just one song.

Bottom line is that it's just really difficult to promote yourself in Japan. Most of the big hits in Japan lately are from soundtracks to dramas and movies and stuff. There are a few singers that get stuck in the trap where the only songs people listen to from them are the ones that belong to a drama OST. If they release a track outside of dramas, it gets like zero traction.
