Liking a person with a complicated situation...

First off, I'm a guy, I'm gay, and a college student. If any of that disturbs you, please leave this thread.

Onto the main part of why I'm here, I am confused and I need advice/input.

This guy I recently met and started talking to is really cool and he and I have been flirting back and forth quite a bit. He started hanging out with my usual group of friends (who I was with everyday this semester) so I ended up seeing him quite a bit this past week when he showed up.

Everything would be fine and dandy and I would make a move on him, but he admitted to all of us recently that he's in a strange situation.

He's 20, and his ex is 16 years old and about to graduate high school. Except they're not really exes.

The two of them separated a while ago because of certain reasons I don't remember, but they pretty much told each other they wanted to end up together eventually and just do whatever until then. My friend told his ex he'd 'let him have his fun' since he was still in high school and had lots of things he probably wants to do, so they both have been doing their own thing for a while in terms of relationships and dating, while always keeping the other in mind.

My friend has clearly shown some interest in me from the way he's been interacting with me these past few days (I drove him home alone and it was more obvious), but...

I am really scared of getting involved with a guy in a situation like this. I've been single my entire life and desperation/affection are always in my head, but I don't know if I want to be someone's temporary solace either. I could end up falling for him.

Next time I see him is at a party on Saturday where all my friends are going to, and there's gonna be a lot of alcohol there.

Help.
