The contestants report feeling both nervous and excited for their first episode, with several of them mentioning that they weren’t able to get much sleep the night before. Stone Music Entertainment’s Jang Gyu Ri remarks, “I’m curious [to see what ‘Produce 48’ will be like],†while SKE48’s Matsui Jurina confesses, “My heart is pounding because I have no idea what we’ll be doing today.†HOW Entertainment’s Kim Min Seo expresses more confidence, saying, “We’ll destroy everyone [with our performance].†Both the Korean and the Japanese contestants worry about the language barrier, with FAVE Entertainment’s Shin Soo Hyun revealing, “Since communication is important, I studied Japanese in the car on the way here.†Pledis Entertainment’s Lee Ga Eun, who later went on to demonstrate her Japanese skills on the show, also says, “I really want to converse with [the Japanese trainees] in Japanese.†However, the trainees don’t have to worry for long—once inside the filming studio, they quickly find ways to make friends, asking each other’s ages and getting to know one another.
