Come one come all OH debaters of all kinds! There is no wrong kind of debater here in debate club! I don't have a debate club at my school and I love it so I figured, hey why the heck not make this thread. Debate club is designed to be a weekly activity that allows you to exercise your debate skills, brush up on your facts and answer any and all questions about debate.


 


How does debate club work? 


Every Sunday a new poll goes up with a list of debate topics, suggestions are very welcome. The members of debate club will choose the topics from the poll and the first and second choices become the topics for the week. Then on Wednesday and Saturday


the actual debate happens so you have two days to prepare for your debate. When the day comes a scheduled time decided by the members will begin the debate. You'll have 30 minutes to post your statement or it becomes null and void to the argument.


 


How do I sign up for debate club? 


Simply say you want to in this thread! I'll put you on a list and send you a pm or your preferred method of communication elsewhere every Sunday after the poll goes up.


 


Can I just join one debate? 


Absolutely! This goes for everyone who joins the debate. When the topics go up you need to say if you are joining the debate and if so, are you on the aff or neg side?


 


What are the rules of debate club? 


1. Don't talk about debate club (bad joke i'm sorry)


2. Personal attacks within or outside of a debate will get you kicked. You'll be put on a banned users list on the op and no one will be allowed to respond to you. 


3. Patiently wait your turn. Treat this as a formal debate. I'll have a queue of who can present their opening statements, arguments and rebuttals, i'll flip a coin to decide whoever goes first and it's first come first serve for statements. 


4. Work with each other! Whether you're on the aff or neg side send information to your teammates so you can all strengthen your argument. 


5. Debates should not be taken personally, when a debate is over it is OVER. The topic will not be discussed further in the thread. Debates should only be contained within the day they are allotted. If you really feel the need to continue, private message each other.


6. Have fun! Don't let debate club ruin your relationship with other people or skew your image of them. Essentially this is supposed to be a fun activity for users who enjoy debating like I do! 


 


Well why should I debate? 


Debate helps you to educate yourself on many subjects and develop varied political and social views. It gives you critical thinking skills that will guide you for the rest of your life. You can develop tools for research and organization. Debate also improves your written and oral comprehension and allows you to effectively resolve issues and arguments. Students involved in debates consistently also score better on the SATs and ACTs. 


 


I don't know how to debate, where can I learn? 


Personally I believe debate is best learned through experience so I encourage you to involve yourself in school debate clubs or learn through watching the debaters here. If you're unable to here's some great resources on learning the basics of debate. You're also free to ask myself or any other member of the debate club if you can dm them with questions!

sorry! that's the only one way formal debates can work, otherwise we'd just be yelling at each other. i'd still love to see you join!
