duh

it's quite...weird how they are plagiarizing this

like Tencent officially bought copyrights, whereas this is openly plagiarizing

I feel like they didn't originally plagiarise because Lai Guanlin appeared in one of the PR videos for a participant, I highly doubt Mnet/YMC would have allowed that if it was a plagiarised show.

They were probably working with Mnet at the beginning, because there's just too many similarities to be plagiarism (someone plagiarising would try to make it a little less obvious), and they apparently had a lot of Mnet ex-staff working with them as well. Something must have happened between the two companies while the show was being made and Mnet probably pulled out while IQYI told themselves "we've already started it might as well go ahead with it".

If that were true, then IQIYI would have mentioned that they worked with Mnet initially and at least acknowledge the PD101 influences of IP.

But in the bts interview, the IP exec producer (who is also an IQIYI vice-CEO) only cited one person he invited to work with IP (the designer of the IP logo)  and did not mention any MNET/PD101 staff at all. He describes the visual design concept of the show as if he  came up with it on his own and did not mention being influenced by MNet/PD101 at all.

Even when confronted by a FRAPA study alleging that Idol Producer  scored 88% in the copyright infringement scale vs PD101,  their main response (Source) :

“We pride ourselves in producing blockbuster original content with innovation. ‘Idol Producer’ is a great example of iQIYI’s capability to combine our understanding of Chinese audiences and creativity.

Probably more pride than anything.

I do agree with hlynb93 in that the high quality production (which is some ways even an improvement on the original PD101), makes me suspect that there may have been MNET staff involvement (whether officially and/or unofficially) at some stage. Mnet also remained curiously quiet about IP until much later on, is telling IMO.

May I have the source? Bc Mnet was already complaining abt copyright infringement ever since IQIYI showed teasers for IP (lit. translation "Idol Evolution" in Korean).

It's not weird coming from China. When it comes to Chinese industry you have two ways of doing things :

- copying what foreign companies do, and not quite managing to keep the quality

- or making a business agreement with a foreign company, learning from it to make the same quality, then proceed on making the same product but cheaper, so the foreign company isn't competitive anymore

The Iqiyi and Tencent approaches are exactly that.

Idol Producer lost some 'qualities' of the original Produce. I agree it wasn't necessarily a bad thing, especially when it comes to the fabricated drama.

Idol Producer made me like almost every single boy and the group bonds in the group and the group they ended up choosing.

They kicked off the really problematic contestant before the season even started, thank goodness, didn't need him tainting everyone else with his bad character for the sake of ratings like some other shows might have done.

It was one of the best variety shows I watched and I went into indifferent thinking it was just going to be another survival show. It got me so pumped up for Produce 101 CN and now I'm just like...when is iQiyi's plagiarized version of a IP going to start???

Season 2 is going to be released the 1st quarter of next year. Most likely January.

A pity, isn't it. Especially since iQiyi did it that much better, though that still doesn't give them the right to plagiarize. I am so disappointed in how the girls' PD101 turned out.

Tbh i stopped watching after 1st ranking announcement, bc it was suuuuuper long and quite boring.(i watched for Xuan Yi and Mei Qi only tbh lol)

But i heard that some kind of a mess happened between Temcent and Sunnee's company which lead to her screentime decrease wtf

Anyways, was it THAT bad?
